Interesting field- knife fighting.

I'm a complete 0 knowledge about it, but my feeling is that the most effective form would be pretty much the opposite of what I see in the Philipino stuff.

Intuitively, I feel like they rely way too much on closing distance using hand to block, 2 hands to push away the attacking arm of the opponent, etc.

If I had to fight with a knife, (ok Id probably chicken out if someone pulled a swiss knife on me), if I did, I would use it more fencing style : arm stretched out in front of me with the other arm in the back, and try to attack long-distance and to escape instead of blocking.

Anyways, like i said i don t know anything about it, so...

Based on experience, you should choose a weapon driven martial art or a good self defense course when it comes to Escrima/Knife fighting. A DVD will only enhance or compliment what you have already learned because the hands on training and timing is priceless.

Try any of the Dan Inosanto videos. They are pretty good. And he explains the three ranges of weapons fighting pretty good. And as opposed to KBE6EKCTAH_CCP's comment, the empty hand stuff against a blade is only a certain more advanced part of Kali. Naturally if you haven't grown up training Kali or any weapons based martial art, you shouldn't attempt to fight someone with a knife empty handed. Using a knife is easy, anyone can butcher a pig. Not everyone can really defend against.
