escrima

Anyone train rattan sticks? How often do you train? How effect would you say these are? I had a friend in high school that trained this briefly and I was just thinking about it earlier. Seems like it could be better than a pocket knife.

1. I train with rattan sticks. Also kamagong and hickory sticks
2. I train in classes 3 days a week
3. I think they are effective.
4. Eskrima includes knife training.

I train with them at home. They can be highly effective if you know what you are doing

I work in Law Enforcement and was considering Escrima for the knife defense. Is there much, if any open hand combat or is it all with the sticks or blades? I have a wrestling and Jiujitsu backround and was also hoping to work on hand speed, etc. WOuld y'all advise Escrima??

Over 70% of law enforcement use Eskrima techniques and training. SEAL teams 5 and 6, USMC, special forces, and force recon among others are trained extensivly in Eskrima for hand to hand combat.
Eskrima contains sword, knife, stick, empty hand, long weapons (staff), flexible weapons (whip), projectiles and throwing weapons. The empty hand portion contains Panatukan which is Filipino Boxing. Panatukan basics are the precursor to modern boxing but most of its techniques are considered "dirty boxing". Eskrima also contains dumog which is filipino wrestling. It contains many locks, breaks, takedowns, and submissions.
Eskrima IMO is the most complete martial art. If you need any help finding a school, a specific system, or questions I can help out.

Extremely convienent location and I'm available on Sundays. Aside from Insonato books and Human Weapon, I'm only familiar with basic Police Academy "Escrima". I'm still researching Latosa...

I think that escrima would be great for Police work. Let me know what you find. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with Latosa Escrima. Try it out if it's convienent and you like the teacher and setting stick with it.
I am partial to Inosanto Kali and its systems contained within it (Lameco, Pekiti-Tersia, Giron Arnis, Cabales Serrada, Illustrisimo) so I'm sorry to say that these systems carry the bulk of my knowledge.
There are a couple Inosanto Kali schools in Queens if you don't mind traveling. Also Sayoc Kali, Atenzia Kali, and Pekiti-Tersia have schools in the New York area that I know of.
The two inosanto Kali schools in Queens I recommend are: progressive martial arts, http://www.pmajkd.com/
and nubreed martial arts, http://www.nubreedmartialarts.com/
Sayoc's main website is: http://www.sayoc.com/
Pekiti- Tersia's main website is: http://www.pt-go.com
Atenzia Kali's main site is: http://www.atienzakali.com/
