Decided to buy a shotgun
I decided to use my tax return/rebate to buy a shotgun for home defense. I'm looking at maybe a Remington 870 syn tactical model. I would also like to get a 14" barrel, but I understand this requires getting a tax stamp? Does anyone know anything about the process? And are there any particular features you would recommend for the shotgun? I know they have extensions to add more shells. I was also thinking ghost ring sites. What else?

Can't go wrong with an 870. Good choice.
Have you considered lighting yet? Doesn't have to be weapon-mounted, but having a home-defense firearm without an accompanying SureFire is just wrong.

Right. I forgot to mention the lighting. Yeah, I've looked at some SureFire lights, but they were almost as expensive as the shotgun itself, like $250-300. That doesn't seem right. But yeah, I know I need to get a light. Do you have any suggestions? Or should I just go with one of the expensive SureFire attachments?

Get the longest barrel possible.

For a home defense weapon??? That's basically the opposite of everything I've ever read.

Yeah, I checked those out. It basically came down to a Mossberg 500/590 vs Remington 870. I don't know a whole lot about shotguns, so I based my decision on various gun reviews and home defense articles. It seems more people recommend the Remington 870, and it seems there are more aftermarket options available for it.

The 870 is a good, reliable weapon. I wouldn't bother with jumping through the hoops to get the 14" barrel. The 18.5" will be fine IMHO.
Take a look at this light.

I'm sure there's a cheaper place to find them...
Overall, good choice man.

ugh... another guy the equates shotgun to HD. Seriously the weapons noobs on these forums are rampant. Ask Pat Rogers or any real CQB instructor what he has next to his bedside. I'm still waiting for the "racking the pump will scare off the intruder BS."
And to the dude who wrote "get the longest barrel possible"... get a clue and stop spreading your BS around the internet please.
ETA... remember with a shotgun you have to be accountable for 8 pellets (if you're using the correct loading, and you're not some retard using bird shot or a slug), and tests on drywall show that they (the pellets) like to penetrate. The correct answer in the opinion of most people high up the CQB food chain is the AR15 family of weapons systems. The .223 surprisingly does not penetrate as well in walls and you may think since it fragments like a motherfuck when it hits something relatively soft. And 30rds vs. 7 rounds?? And you now have the ability to punch through body armor.

While I still remember... before you buy any accessory, save yourself some money and get some training at Blackwater, Frontsite, etc to figure out what you want. Buying a $300 optic only to realize its worthless for you would suck... wouldn't it? And you got to be proficient with your weapon, I mean doing CQB drills and not just popping off at the range. I suggest visiting the 10-8 forums and reading up in the training sections as well.

I plan to get some training. I also have a conceal carry 9mm and went through a couple defensive handgun classes. I've just been wanting to get a shotgun for awhile now.
