One method taught at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) is a little something called "cutting the pie". It can be used wehn enteringa room, turning a corner, or looking for bad guys behind cover.

Basically, while in the ready position, you take a small lateral step and scan/make safe a small section of area. Take another step and so on. It's not as dynamic as the methods presented in the Urban Terrain manual but it very well when you are trying to be quiet.

I hope I explained it properly. If you have any questions, just PM me.
