Actually, 9mm have really shitty stopping power. The bullets slide through flesh instead of slapping into it and transmitting the energy. Thats why the FBI was looking for a round to replace it, ala 10mm. If you want knockdown power, get a .40 or a .45. Thing is, .40 ammo is more rare, therefore expensive. .45's are really good, but they have a pretty decent kick. Best .45 around is the world fameous Colt 1911. Used by the american military through 2 world wars.
Look up wound ballistics and studies - you'll find all the information there.
Neither the .40 or the .45 is a good round for your first pistol. And neither have many models out as revolvers. *shrug* it's about preference.
Best advice is go to a shooting range and shoot a revolver, and a semi automatic. Then shoot different rounds through both. See what feels right. Handguns are like shoes - they have to fit YOU.

Don't get gun ranges confused with Gun stores. Gun ranges don't sell guns - they rent them to people to use at their range. They won't push a gun on you, at all. Most gun owners are very helpful and will give you a hand on choosing one. Again, don't feel like you will be pressured if you go to a range.
Used guns are great if they're not broken - something that a gunsmith would be able to help you with. But gunsmiths can be like car salesmen, so I'd stay away from used guns.

cool man thanks, i thought they were together, like at the gun range, you rent the guns, then they try to sell them to you, are there any brands, any of you suggest staying away from? like guns that jam alot, are always overpriced, or just suck??

IIRC it was from "Devils Advocate" when Al Pacino tries to get Keanu Reeves to have sex with his sister and give birth to the antichrist. As a whole the movie wasn't that good, but it had some good parts.

I agree 9 mils stopping power isn't that great, but I dont want to suggest a higher caliber for a beginer.
