Most situations requiring a pistol shouldn't be further than 5 meters..
In my experiences...
5 meters=

Effective secondary weapon range for hostage situations (point shooting not reccomended)
Effective secondary weapon range for clearing situations
Effective secondary weapon range for public situations
Effective secondary weapon range for emergency cqc

I use the term "secondary" because most situations would be addresed swiftly with my primary weapon..for a time that was a SOPMOD Block I M4, which would suffice fro virtually any situation...

the only true negatives to point shooting are:
-weapon vs hand size: slide runs over the pointer if you don't have the right balance.
-it's not a great way to group dimes at the range

It is a reliable way to quickly engage and eliminate a threat..

As I was learning this stuff I thought about Clint Eastwood in unforgiven where he's trying to shoot the bottles of the fence rail and keeps missing so he gets ticked and goes and gets his 12ga. LOL

One thing I have noticed is that lately my eyes have gotten really weak, especially dim lighting like a range. So I'm not as effective at point shooting as I used to be but I think I had every shot in the center mass of the silhouette.

I spoke with this Sgt about hte shooting being that he competes on a national level. This guy is so into shooting that he trains at it almost as much as I train at JJ.

The one point that he brought up was that at the range when you point shoot you can see the holes in the target and adjust your aim. He said that when you shoot people you may not be able to see where the bullet strikes (In the upper torso) due to clothes or a jacket. He said that he has seen people not even react to being shot. He prefers to use at least the front sight when shooting close and of course both sights other times.

Like I said I am not the best shot around and thank GOD I have not shot anyone yet. I am going to proactice some point shooting and hopefully it can help me out.

Definatelly practice aimed and point shooting.
shooting is a skill just like bjj, practice and then begin adding tweaks.

A lot of people in the ccw and leo communities are beginning to talk about a shooting continuum...so there is less of a line between the different styles. Your friend competes in target shooting just as you train bjj, they have some of the answers to complex problems but they are only pieces of an entire spectrum of tools one can use in a fight/combat. This could be related to how the ufc revolutionized todays martial arts world. It revealed the good and bad.

Close range (subjective) and suprised- point shooting should take over, medium to long range aimed shots with a good site picture.
One should practice point shooting, snap shots, draws, no-shoots, etc. It only takes 10min a day or less. If i was a cop i would take that as part of my daily workout and insure i got my reps in.

note- Many of the classics including this book do not take into account the revolution that simulations, simunitions, video, and airsoft have to offer. They were great for their time, but a training revolution has taken place over the last few years.

i think this is the gist of point shooting.
first hit him, then maybe more, then you can decide if a carefully aimed hit is necessary.
anyways i like the idea of shooting them to the ground.

also see zipper.
