Great link. In the self defense world there are constantly attacks on mma by people trying to sell their "combat" programs. This article sums it up great. What we tell cops who come to our gym and those in the academy is come to class, learn what is being taught, use the techniques that you think will benefit you and disregard the rest but recognize those techniques in case they are used against you.

We get it MMA is it. TMA's suck. All the good techniques of fighting were invented since 1993 and anyone who does kata is an unenlighted dinosaur.

The article in the link said that other than constraints for safety, MMA fights are as real as it gets.

However, this is obviosuly not the case.

Indeed high levels of contact are allowed, but the situation is contrived. The average Joe/Jane is not likely to find themselves being a professional athlete, fighting for money, for the entertainment of fans, on a pay-per-view event, for a shiny belt, hawking supplements and many other products, agreeing to fight another combat athlete, knowing their opponent in advance, training for months in advance of the fight, knowing they will be in the same weight class, in a ring, with a referee, with ring girls, with announcers analyzing your fight, being concerned about points, being coached, with trainers, with many rules, with gloves, with wrapped wrists, with restrictions on clothing, knowing it will always be one-on-one, and on and on, in their real day to day lives.

It is also a sad reality of sports/entertainment that the viewer has no way of really knowing if some matches are fixed or if the participants are using steroids (except for the ones who have tested positive, of course). Such things have happened in the history of sports/entertainment.

The article comes from a JKD school. Did Bruce Lee even participate in any verified no holds barred tournaments to put his theories to the test?

sssmashing and statisticool, I'm not even going to bother with a reply until you re-read that article because you clearly missed the whole point.

Good article.

I like the fact that he puts focus on learning to fight for self defense.

(Plus MMA if you want to do that too)

What I got out of the article was very complimentary of mma, the author's view was that if you wanted the best street fighting mma with a few tweaks was hard to beat.
