Sorry if this has been posted before.
This should settle questions about which caliber is best - whichever one can penetrate enough, AND doesn't pierce too many walls and kill innocent people.

These tests are obviously not completely scientific, but I don't know of anyone else putting theory to practice instead of sitting in the high chair and spouting off egotistical wisdom.

Pretty sobering stuff. The 'Buick of Truth' demonstrates the reason that army types call normal vehicles 'soft-skinned' seeing as most normal army issue rounds will penetrate straight through them!

I've seen fire penetration demos in the army. 5.56mm will go through single skin brick walls in a couple of shots whilst 7.62mm will penetrate through double skin walls. When the paras still used the FN-FAL they'd had the option to enter buildings through the walls to gain the element of surprise.

That is also why if an army occupies a town they'll usually choose solid stone buildings as their base of operations e.g. churches, civic halls and car parks
