Is it also not dangerous to assume that if you resist, you will prevail over the mugger and not get hurt? I make no such assumption. I meant this thread/topic as a caution, not pointing out a 100% rule.

I see what you're saying, XTrainer. And yeah, it does make some sense. And yeah, you can't just assume that if you hand over your goodies, you get away unharmed. The simple reality is that you cannot find yourself the target of a criminal who makes his bread by forcing/coercing people into doing things under the foregone conclusion that "If I ______, then my assailant will surely ________."

But am I supposed to believe that the acquaintence of yours who got popped in the back even after he complied would have fared better trying to fight back Maybe yes, maybe no. My only point is that one need be aware of the reality. I think the only thing anyone can do is try and assess the situation, consider your options (fight, flee, or hand over your stuff) and go with it Yup, hence the need for threads like this so people can understand the reality and make good decisions . Unless I was heavily outnumbered or staring down the business end of a handgun, I would probably fight. I might be a fool for doing so. There's no such thing, I think, as a happy ending to a violent crime, but rather only a couple of less-shitty ones. Agreed!

Regarding the discussion about the criminal mindset: contrary to what some folks clearly think, the thought process and motivations of a predatory criminal who robs people is usually not that hard to figure out. You have something, they want it. They also generally do not want to tangle with anyone and have to fight and risk changing roles from "attacker" to "defender." The generally mark as victims people they think they can overpower, which is why prevention works well. Me...I avoid dark/blind corners, stand tall, walk in a brisk and authoritative manner, appear to be aware of my surroundings and maybe even pull a pissed-off looking face; at 6'3", 215 pounds, I think this makes me an unattractive target. Also agreed, but remember, there are NO rock-solid rules regarding many types of criminal behavior (without getting behavioral psych discussion)

But whole point is you have a fighting chance, rather than believing you're safe because you did what they told you.

The best "chance" you have is after you give them the money. They have to pick it up, take it, etc. Drop the cash and bolt son. A drawn gun pointed at you is no joke.

every1 is different, so theres no definet answer to any scenario.
some criminals dont really want to hurt someone, since it'll lead to more serious offences. some are really fucked in the head. Some are more scared than you are.

it's all based on smarts+luck

personally, i think i'd probably rather just beat the shit out of someone

Sure, nothing wrong with that. I'm not talking strategy or fussing over the loss of property. I'm talking mindset, the fallacy of "If I surrender X I'll receive Y and be okay."

I look at it like this... if you try to forcefully take something from me or verbally command me to give up my hard earned possessions or money, you will burn or kill me trying to kick the shit out of you.

sure these people got burned. But they did everything they could to avoid that situation. You think that muggers like having bodies put on them? Fuck no. As for the girl, the mugging was just an excuse or a stepping stone to raping her. He was going to rape her. At the end of the day, if giving someone your wallet gives you a chance of avoiding bodily harm then do it. What did you want that guy to do? Try to fight someone with a gun?
