The Best Way to hold a knife

I was taught by my sensei to never show your knife to your enemy while fighting. Most people hold their knife in a square stance while standing on the balls of their feet, the knife pointing at the enemy. The problem with this IMHO is your opponent can tell when the strike is going to come. Here is a different way: Stand in a side stance. Your lead hand pointing at the enemy is empty. Your other hand is behind your rear leg holding the knife. Its a waki stance using a knife. From this position, your knife is hidden, and thus the strike is unpredictable to your enemy. It is also hard for your opponent to gage distance because he can't see how long your knife is. Meanwhile, you will be poised like a scorpion ready to strike if he enters your space.

Try it on your friends! Fun stuff

the blade can run up your forearm, all he will see is a closed fist,no need to hide behind the leg.
thats if your stupid enough to attack someone with a knife.

You wouldn't hold a pen knife in a saber grip, and you wouldn't use a bowie knife in an icepick grip. etc etc Also, how are you using it? Are dueling with or ambushing the opponent?

There are a lot of different grips and styles to use when in a confrontation. If you don't practice knife fighting a lot, keep it simple and use a HAMMER GRIP. Hold it - just like a hammer with the blade up. It's a simple grip that you won't forget when stressed and it's natural.

Concentrate on J.G.S. (Jab - Grab - Stab).

Don't concentrate on hiding the knife behind the leg, instead concentrate on drawing it from a concealed position and striking with it FAST.

Knife fighting isn't pretty or predictable. It's bloody, brutal, and it always ends fast.

You have very limited angle when you hold a knife in a reverse grip. If use the "hammer" grip you have many more attack possibilities.

If you are talking to me, that wasn't what I was describing. Stand in a side stance. your lead hand is empty. your rear hand is holding the knife with the tip pointing down. your legs are spread apart. Its a waki stance using a kodatchi.

It looks like Im not the only one around here to figure on the best way to gut a BG. Heck, I even have a plan for dogs.

My main plan if I have my knife and am confronted is to use it in straight jab to abdomen or high leg/thigh. I figure that would be pretty tuff to block. I would assume my usuall semi wrestling/grappling position but just not so low like in a grappling match. Keep my left hand up and jab/block with left and straight thrust to the guts or thigh with knife hand. I think Romans used that straight thrust jab?

If a dog is the attacker I guess I take the bite to the arm (hopefully left arm) and stab the shit outa the neck region and hopefully bust his carotid. Ive also liked the idea of stabbing in the rear leg position. That would suck getting chomped on by a pooch and having to horse around with a blade so I just carry OC and a glock. Seeing as how that aint an option in some states/countries the blade theory/practice comes in handy.

They can? See so many people get in a knife fight and they have that knife in their hands and they forget about having any other weapons. Let them see the knife. Let them know the danger. Let them focus their attention on it. Then clock them with your other hand or a kick. Then you follow up with the knife.

There are pros and cons to both showing the knife and keeping it hidden. The biggest mistake most people will make in a knife fight is to forget that they can use punches and kicks. Use everything you have. If you do not you can end up dead real quick.
