best starter pistol

I realize that a .22 would probably be the best gun to start out with for a pistols, but I don't want to spend the money on a .22 then upgrade to something bigger. So if I had to start out with a bigger cal. and gun, what would it be? I hope that makes sense to anyone besides me.

I've heard that there used to be a kit available to make a .45 ACP 1911 into a .22. No permanent change. Everythin' could be swapped back to shoot .45 again...
You'd probably be alright shootin' like a .32 or even a 9mm...

What is the purpose for the gun? Having fun at the range and punching paper, competition (if so what kind?), or self/home defense.

For punching paper, you can't beat a .22LR such as a Ruger semi auto (~$300). The gun is very accurate and balances well. The ammo is so cheap you can spend all day on the range for $10 in ammo.

If the goal is competition, you need to figure out which sport you want to compete in. Equipment is fairly different between the events (USPSA, IDPA, NRA bullseye,...).

For a range gun that will double as a self/home defense gun, get something that is .38 or 9mm or bigger in caliber from a major manufacturer (S&W, HK, Glock, Sig,...). Try a bunch and see what feels best in your hands. The more comfortable you are, the better you will shot it. If you actually plan on shooting it more than once every few months consider the price of ammo too. 9mm is much cheaper than the other centerfire calibers.

I want a .22LR for just casual plinking and varmint control. Just something to carry in the woods when I'm out dicking around with tree stands and shit. I am looking hard at the Walther P22. The more I think about it, the more I really don't think I'll need a large cal for a while at least. I don't really feel the need to get a pistol for protection, and I don't ever plan on getting a conceal and carry license, so I guess I really don't need a large cal.

.22LR ammo is just so cheap and they are fairly accurate, and I suppose they will kill a coon dead as 4 in the morning just as good as a 9mm.

I think the Browning Buckmark is a better choice.

Just checked out the Browning pistol you mentioned. Looks good and not too spendy. Probably better for what I want it for too.

I don't need anything for self-defense. I kinda came to the realization I just wanted the bigger cal gun to just have a bigger cal gun, and I don't have money to throw around like that. I actually have utility for a .22, and I can actually have fun with it because ammo is dirt cheap.
