I prefer an RPG and/or a few landmines in the hallway.

But yeah seriously, shotgun is the way to go imo.

Which Taurus is this?

I see Taurus getting hated on, and I don't get it. I own a Taurus PtT-92 with adjustable target sights I bought back in '91 and have shot the living shit out of it for 15 years using every type of ammo I can think of from high-dolla factory ammo (ball, hollowpoint, hi-velocity) to gun-show reloads and except for one box of shitty-shit aluminum-cased target loads I bought at my old gun store which I do not think were intended to be reliable ($5 for 50) the weapon has functioned flawlessly, reliably puts lead anywhere on the target I want from 5 to 25 yards, as remains covered by a lifetime factory warranty. It was my go-to piece for 14 years, and I would not hesitate to stake my life on it in a pinch (I have, in fact).

I've known folks who have others; they're mostly nice guns. Taurus is a generally respected manufacturer known for making a good product.

NOW THEN: my dad had a Taurus compact 9mm ("Milennium," think) that neither he nor I can hit well at all with. It has a sluggish, spongy trigger that seems to have about 2 feet of creep and 6 feet of travel to drop the hammer. I shots low and right, which after some experimenting at the range (observing my dad, shooting it myself) I arrived at the seemingly obvious conclusion that this was the result of having to muscle the trigger with a lot of finger. Than again, it occurred to me that it's a hold-out piece, an "Oh, shit!" gun not intended to snipe with. So I can't totally fault it, even though plenty of better compacts exist.

As for the law: a safe of rule of thumb, gents, is to consider yourself legally obligated to do everything within reason to remove yourself from a dangerous situation. If you are shooting someone, make sure it is because you firmly believe you have NO OTHER WAY out that will not result in you or another innocent person greivously injured, raped, maimed or dead. 'Cuz odds are, you will be expected to prove it in court, and your ability to do so will decide if you go free or take group showers for 5-10 upstate.

Beautiful gun, kishiro.

Regarding shotguns as a home defense weapon, here is a link to the results from one man's tests:

http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3.htm

There were a few interesting bits, like #1 buck penetrating less than 9mm, and some anecdotes about people being shot with #6 buck.

i like the first piece of shotgun advice, especially how just the sound of cocking the shotgun will most likely scare an intruder off. however, i think id rather have a combination of both that and a pistol. from what i hear, hk usp compact is a good choice.

question: where do you guys keep your guns?

I sleep with a pistol on my nightstand and my shotgun on its own shelf to the other side of my bed. I also sleep within grabbing distance of an aluminum bat, a 10" blade tanto, a tomahawk, a fully packed survival/bug out bag, a set of clothes and an assortment of flashlights. Yes, I live in a bad neighborhood.

With a shotgun you can't miss due to the spread of the shot and nobody can withstand a load of that shit center mass. Also, it won't go through walls and kill someone in the next room or the neighbors next door.

He also said that if you don't keep one in the chamber and have to cock it, the sound is a universal, threatening sound that will usually scare the average burglar away without having to discharge a round and go through all the police bullshit.
A 12ga is definitely superior to a pistol, but your buddy was wrong about some stuff.

No.6 bird shot may not penetrate all the way to the bad guys vital organs. Use buckshot. Both will go through a wall (sheetrock isn't exactly tough), and while one load will obviously still be carrying more energy, you should probably just focus on checking to see what is behind your target.

You do have to aim a shotgun. The shot pattern across a big room is going to be about the size of your fist, at the absolute maximum.

If you have to get a pistol, get whatever fits your hand the best and whatever you shoot the best with. Go with a 12 gauge though for home defense.
