krnguy kills me with breaking out his Springfield XD porn (read as jealous)!! But he is right it is a fantastic pistol - one of the best carry guns on the market.

Back to the question - if you are looking for a gun for under the bed (assuming you have a normal sized bed) I would go with the Mossburg 500 with pistol grip. I would put 2 slugs in last (last loaded is first fired) - they are great for firing through walls or doors. Then i would put in 5x NATO rounds - they are nasty and will cover a tremendous amount of range(s). If you want a pistol the best answer is - it depends. Some like a revolver (wheel gun) because it only requires one hand for operation and you do not have to clear misfired cartridges. But anymore if you are using good, modern ammo in a clean gun jams aren't the issue they once were. If you want portability I would look at the XD but if it is not going to be a carry gun I would go with a Paraordinance - it is a double column 45 and will allow you to load 15 with one in the pipe.

The original poster is from Texas - and they highly encourage you to shoot people who break in to your home (or look at you funny for that matter)

BTW - in Ohio you can use lethal force against someone armed with a firearm or edged weapon (or if they make furtive or threatening movement which could be construed as moving for a concealed weapon) if you meet the rest of the burden for self defense
-not have provoked the conflict or escalated it (threaten, name call, lets take it outside, take a swing etc
- be in reasonable fear for your life or the life of others
- meet the duty to retreat - you must run away if you can (in Ohio you have no duty to retreat in your own home but if he is on your lawn you should retreat to the house)

Best to know the laws in your own state.

According to my cop buddy:

1) Dog.

2) Home security system.

3) 12 ga. w/ birdshot (#6, #4)

4) Flashlight (mounted to weapon if possible)

5) Cell phone.

6) Move to a better neighborhood.

Also according to my cop buddy - if you shoot them outside, drag them back in - forensics be damned.

Also also according to my cop buddy - don't stop shooting once you start. Better to explain that shit to a judge than find out the intruder wasn't incapacitated.

Goin' back to somethin' brought up earlier, you're allowed to defend yourself and your home, but if you think that your life is in danger, Ohio law, at least, says that you have a duty to flee (even FROM your own home - trust me, we discussed this for a half hour in my CCW class, and my teacher was a small town cop - unless can't get wife and kids out), and only if you are unable to flee are you allowed to respond with deadly force... My personal feelin' is, keep a Mossberg with a shell in the magazine; Hear a noise in the middle of the night, "chuk-chuk." Very few people gonna stick around to find out if ya got a shell in the chamber or not.

Also, the guy that taught my CCW class basically said, "law be damned, someone breaks into my house, I'm gonna shoot 'em." But, as I said, he's a cop...

Yeah, a lot of states used to have a "duty to retreat" law, but fewer and fewer do now.
