There are a couple handgun threads already. From statistics, all handguns in the 9mm - .45 range had similiar stopping power (91-96%) from a body shot. You should pick one that you can fire comfortably. If you've never shot a gun before or are a sissy, you might not handle a higher caliber as well.

He said to load it with Num. 6 bird shot because most home invasion shootings occur at the distance of a hallway. With a shotgun you can't miss due to the spread of the shot and nobody can withstand a load of that shit center mass. Also, it won't go through walls and kill someone in the next room or the neighbors next door.
He also said that if you don't keep one in the chamber and have to cock it, the sound is a universal, threatening sound that will usually scare the average burglar away without having to discharge a round and go through all the police bullshit.

#6 birdshot is a good choice too, more likely to wound/incapacitate than kill

Good idea, unless you're married to Courtney Love.

#6 bird shot center mass will most def. kill at 5-10 yards. It will blow a hole right in the chest. There is practically no expansion at 5 yards, and little at 10. Let alone the distance from a bed to the hall way. Believe me, the best way is to load your first round bird shot, second round slug, third round bird shot, remove the plug and repeat as needed.
We used to take large hams, mellons, and all kinds of shit to the range, a shotgun will blow a ham in half at close distance. Pig flesh is similiar to human meat. We first learned to suture on pigs feet in the service before suturing on humans.
