Is it her first time shooting? Is it for protection.
For a range i would say some foarm of 22.
For defense some foarm of 45.
Do not get her a beretta for self defense...

Listen, I went thru myself. Ended up with a .38 revolver as it was my Dads' and he passed away. My wife can handle it and if she runs out of ammo, it has a 6" barrel and she can swing it.

My brother in law is a cop and has been on about 100 break in calls that involve a woman and home invasion and a gun.
He told me to get a revolver, lite load (as you don't want the bullets going thru walls and killing children). He said 99 out of 100 times the woman will shoot till the gun is empty. And 100 out of 100 times when the invader hears the first shot out of peace maker, he's gone.

.38 is perfect for a woman. Good luck. I hope she gets one.

My wife has pretty small hands, so she really like medium (or even small) frame guns. Her favorite is the Glock 19, but she also likes the Tarus Millenium Pro. She has a .38 revolver, but she hates shooting it. It's really loud and kicks up pretty hard. Though she can shoot it, it's just not comfortable for her. My primary gun is a 9mm, so that's what she has too. It just makes sense to share ammo.

for handgun use in home defense the .40 S&W or the .357 Sig are probably the best handguns.

the .40 has low recoil and high accuracy almost identical to the 9mm, and offers far greater stopping power. with hollow tips, the stopping power is probably close to the .50 ae. basically the recoil and accuracy of a 9mm and lleaving a hole the size of a 50 ae. good handgun choice

i think the same as far as recoil goes for the .357 sig, and it also penetrates body armor.

as far as shotguns, each of the 27-34 pellets in #4 buck are bigger than a 22 caliber. so if all pellets hit the target, assuming they would in small areas (home defense), that's like getting shot 30 times with a .22 all at once. judging the picture below, you could see how shotguns dwarf pistols. 27 .22s make the 50 ae look puny. #4 also has low recoil.

I've read that the .40 has recoil more like a .45. And there's no way you can compare the damage of a .40 to a .50 ae. Also, a .357 would have too much penetrating power. You don't want a bullet to go ripping through every wall in your house injuring someone unintentionally. Bigger is not always better.
