The object is simply to make your home less inviting to a perp than your neighbor's. I assuming you want to deter basic burgs and that you are not a target of something. Typically burgs will avoid anything that looks like it may invovle work, noise, or risk. Here's some simple stuff that has high return for low investment.
1) Lock your doors, windows and garage, if you are not home. Put deadbolts on the entry doors. Use secondary locks or sticks in the tracks of your windows.
2) Remove places to hide by entry points to your home. Cut back bushes, shrubs and trees so that a perp can't conceal himself while he jimmies a window or door (that is locked).
3) Illuminate dark places. Use motion detector lights by your doors, garage and sides of house.
Those basic things will get a perp thinking about the next house unless he wants something specific from you.
Other simple ideas to add on after the above.
4) Furry noise makers. Dogs are great if they fit with your life style. You don't need a pitbull or rotty just a pal that will make a bunch of noise if a stranger is lurking about.
5) plant unfriendly plants by access points. Nobody wants to stand crutch deep in a rose bush, cactus or beaugonvillia while slipping a window.
6) Get a sign(s) from a popular alarm company (i.e. ADT or Brinks) and put it in the same place home(s) with the alarms have them.
7) Along the lines of #6, if dogs aren't in the cards put a dog's water dish (have it personalized for "Rover" or "Satan") by the back door. Remember to keep it full. Or for the ladies living alone, put an old pair of dirty mens work boots by the door (outside).
