Anybody do Archery?

I've always wanted to take up archery. It always looked cool in movies like "The Lost Boys", Monster Squad", and Especially the Rambo movies. I like shooting guns but I don't have time to go to the range as much as I want to. I figure archery I could do In my back yard.

There's an archery store close to my house, but they're always trying to sell the most expensive set-up they have. They really didn't answer any of my questions.

1. If... say for hunting what draw weight would I need for that general purpose(I live in Texas so hogs and deer) I don't hunt, but ya never know right?)?

2. For whatever draw weight y'all recomend what's the effective distance?

3. Do they make collapsible bows like the type John Rambo uses. I don't mean in a comedic way it's just that a set up like that would be perfect for me to keep in my truck in case I was stranded, and in general I wouldn't have to worry about a bulky case for traveling.

4. How do I know If I have the right draw length?

I'm not sure what kind of bow I want to get, but any recomendations based on y'all's experience is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

1. On most bows you can adjust the draw weight. You will need more draw for the pigs then you will for the deer. Pigs are tough bastards to shoot with a bow….. (take a pistol with you)
2. The draw weight doesn’t really affect the distance. You will notice that your bow sill have about the same range regardless of your draw weigh. Each bow is different. I have owned 2 bows and both bows shot very accurately with different arrows.
3. I have never seen a collapsible bow….. Get yourself a compound bow and just deal with the shitty size bow case that never stands up and you cant fit in your truck (unless you use the bed) just like the rest of us!
4. When you buy a bow get it from a shop and they will fit it for you and they should have you shoot a lot of arrows thru it. They will crono you and see how fast you are shooting and they will zero you bow in for you and set your sights.

As for bows….

Read reviews online and see what people say. I have owned 2 PSE’s and they are great! I have never had any problems with then. I have killed everything from deer to elk and turkey .

Let me know if you need any more info!

1. You should check local laws regarding minimum draw weights. Typically it's around 40lbs min. Most guys I shoot with use around 60-70 lbs draw for target and hunting. I think my bows set around 74lbs and it's definitley overkill.
2. the efective distance is usually around 30 yards give or take. any further than that and you risk having the animal jump the string and getting a poor shot. The speed of the arrow is more important at longer ranges.
3.I've seen collapsible recurve bows but they are alot harder to shoot accurately and usually it's what people call reflex shooting. this is where you train you're body pull back and release using more muscle memory than actually aiming.
4. Your draw length will vary depending if you use a mechanical release or not. It's something that you should discuss with the person fitting and tuning your bow. A bow is a very personal weapon that needs to be fitted to you for your draq weight and length. I've always shot PSE's and have no complaints about them. I think my next bow will be either a Bowtech or Matthews.

If you live in Texas take a ride out to Cabelas and plan on spending half a day there trying different bows. You're gonna find one that just feels right and go from there. Tell the rep what your intentions are and what you plan on doing with bow. Plan on spending a pretty pennie to get completely set up. You'll need a rest, sight, release or glove, a decent case, stabilizer, quiver and have some arrows cut once your bow is tuned. Good luck man!! Archery is one of my passion's. There's nothing else like it.

I don't hunt but I shoot traditional. I am a big fan of long bows and recurves.

^^^ I just recently got into shooting recurves myself and really love the challenge. I'm hoping to eventually hunt with a recurve and home made arrows. Ever see the show Best and Worst of Tred Barta??

archery

I'd say but a marginally priced compound. Like the kind with a slight curve in the limb and round wheels. The let off is less, but you can feel the thing a little better I think.

I bought a cheap browning at Walmart. I have a brother who is a competitive archer and has a shit load of $900+ dollar bows, but I'll tell ya, for just killing shit, my pos browning will sling a stick as sure as any of his high doller ones.

I recommend getting some rubber blunt tips. You can bounce those things off the ground and sock Cats and birds, and cows, and all kinds of shit. Its great fun. you can shoot almost anywhere with blunts too cause they don't travel so far.

I shoot no glove and three fingers directly under the arrow. You can line up right down the arrow that way.

Oh and the slight curve in the limb allows for a slight over draw effect for long shots.

try the heavier arrows too, cause at some point they all have a trajectory like a rainbow. might as well get used to it up front.

Good Shooting

Bow hunting is such a gimmick, hunters should use the best weapons available and that is a rifle

There is no practical purpose of hunting with a bow

like this
frekkin despicable
YouTube - Elephant hunting with an Excalibur crossbow!
they know where it is, it is not moving but the dude wants it to be a confirmed crossbow kill so instead of putting it down ASAP they let it bleed to death, that is animal cruelty
