Any .22 fans out there?
I went to the range last weekend for the first time in 2009. I had a great time shooting my Marlin 880SQ, which is a bolt action .22 LR.
I've had that gun for about 12 years now, and the only thing I've done is add a cheap 3x9x32mm scope. Shooting cheap Remington ammo I'm able to put seven shots(the magazine capacity) into a nickel sized group at 50 yards. I haven't tried 100 yard shots yet unfortunately.
Now I'm thinking about getting a Ruger 10/22 to have a semi-auto, tack driving, .22. The only issue is that in order to get a 10/22 to tack drive it is going to require some aftermarket parts, and so far my estimate is that I'd have roughly $1200 into the gun, which seems absurd for a .22, especially considering I would do that to get to the same accuracy as my stock Marlin.
The other thing that I noticed at the range was an almost complete lack of non .22 firearms. When I first got there people had some ARs and one guy had a 12 gauge slug gun, but they didn't shoot those much, so for the last two hours of range time we had 11 .22s and 1 12 gauge. I'm assuming that is directly related to ammo pricing.
Shooting .22s is very nostalgic too. It was the first non air rifle I shot, and overall I think it is a great round. Good for plinking, paper targets, or varmint/small game.
