Any .22 fans out there?

I went to the range last weekend for the first time in 2009. I had a great time shooting my Marlin 880SQ, which is a bolt action .22 LR.

I've had that gun for about 12 years now, and the only thing I've done is add a cheap 3x9x32mm scope. Shooting cheap Remington ammo I'm able to put seven shots(the magazine capacity) into a nickel sized group at 50 yards. I haven't tried 100 yard shots yet unfortunately.

Now I'm thinking about getting a Ruger 10/22 to have a semi-auto, tack driving, .22. The only issue is that in order to get a 10/22 to tack drive it is going to require some aftermarket parts, and so far my estimate is that I'd have roughly $1200 into the gun, which seems absurd for a .22, especially considering I would do that to get to the same accuracy as my stock Marlin.

The other thing that I noticed at the range was an almost complete lack of non .22 firearms. When I first got there people had some ARs and one guy had a 12 gauge slug gun, but they didn't shoot those much, so for the last two hours of range time we had 11 .22s and 1 12 gauge. I'm assuming that is directly related to ammo pricing.

Shooting .22s is very nostalgic too. It was the first non air rifle I shot, and overall I think it is a great round. Good for plinking, paper targets, or varmint/small game.

Good gun for plinking and squirrel hunting. There are tons of guns that are more fun to shoot though.

Good fun and practice

a semi-auto would almost be too much fun. I would get tempted to do silly stuff

fond memories of rat hunting in my friends barn as kids

My dad has the 10/22. It's pretty cool, but the rotary magazine jammed up a few times the first time we used it. I haven't used it since though. I would suggest getting at least two extra magazines because it's a pain to get reloading them.

I bought a 1000 fps pellet gun to screw around with a couple years ago. What's funny is that this pellet gun kicks harder and is almost louder than the 10/22.

I'll probably get multiple mags and the speed loader. They are only $30 and work great.

Check out the Rimfire Central Ultimate 10/22 Thread, it is insane what can be done with a 10/22.

LOL, I know what you mean. I have a semi-auto Savage 22/10 that I cut the trigger guard off of. It sounds like an automatic when you start rapping on the trigger and unload the magazine. I'm trying to find bigger clips for it.

Well, I guess a mod will move it. I saw the "Weapons and Tactics forum" but I thought that was more for martial arts weapons.

I'm going to go and check it out

Most of the discussion is based around guns. Check it out, good stuff.

I don't remember what it is called but didn't the americans in ww2 do something with their garands, sorta firing from the hip and you only keep the trigger pulled all the time and a semi auto becomes a almost full auto?
