I know this video is accepted in Courts in California as a way to gage the threat level of a person with a knife (Distance wise).
What about a baton or nightstick? Do you carry those where you work? Would you feel comfortable using that to defend against a knife if you had it in your hand when forced into aknife situation? Do you carry a knife specifically for your job? I know that KA-Bar has a whole line of law enforcement knives that can be pulled out quickly and have a bent blade to aid in knife retention.

i train in escrima and a little krav maga and i would say if you trained enough it can def. increase your chances in surviving an encounter. my instructor has us role play different scenerios like being at a party or at a club then he attacks us with a plastic knife.

i have learned quite a bit of disarming techniques but i have to say, the best thing you can do is RUN, even in these drills where i know i will be attacked the knife is fast, small, and unpredictable. my instructor has told me time and time again..if someone busts out with a knife forget about pride and RUN. of course if theres no other option such as being in an elevator or having someone else there you have to protect then learning these self defence techniques can be nothing but good for you, but they do nothing if you dont drill them over and over, they should be instant reactions if you think..you die.

i think everyone should learn these types of defence, theyre very important.

I do carry a baton and a ASP ( Collapsable baton). To answer your question about being forced to use them against a knife. Yes I feel fairly confident but that is based off of my martial arts training (29 years). I would not want to go baton against knife but given the scenerio of no other choice I would do what I have to do. I teach Police tactics and have a website www.KibunInc.com

The reason cops go one up in the use of force is that the law allows us to. The bottom line is that I want to go home to my family at night. I am of course not looking to get into a knife fight but my job requires me to confront people who are armed. I have been in many confrontations in which a person has fought with the Police (I work in a tough area), and most of the people when I see them a week later they apologize and say they were drunk or having a bad day. For this reason (along with many others) if we do not have to escalate the use of force to the point of using a gun we try not to.

I carry a decent knife made by Beaver Creek. There are better knives out there but everytime I spend $100 or more on a knife I lose it.

Its worth noting that most people who would pull a knife don't know the best way to use it.

It's just like any self defense, if you have the confidence to use it your chances go up pretty high. Look at all the stories of people who have defended themselves with Karate. Karate sucks, but their confidence in it made it successful against an unskilled opponent.

Of course if you do fuck up you're dead. Invest in a good pair or running shoos.

Even if you are highly practiced at knife defences, you probably still only have a 5% chance of surviving an attack by someone proficient with a blade. That still doesn't stop me from training for this; 5% is better than 0%.

what a ridiculous comment..

Anyway, we recently did some knife defence work (JJJ). I was sceptical at first and following the training and sparring with rubber knives I was absolutely convinced that the drills were utter rubbish. The only thing I did learn from it is that if the attacker does attack by thrusting at you, it is relatively easy to parry the hand and then give the mother of all crosses/palm heel to the chin/nose, which would then allow a follow up. ANY attempt to trap the arm and carry out the drill properly was completely unsuccessful.

have a look at http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/knifefighting.html

good to see that most people on here share the same opinion of "you better have a gun or fast legs, if you're gonna stand a chance"...

2c.

i once watched an ER show on Discovery Health. There was a 16 yr old kid that got stabbed in the back. The doctor claimed his larger muscle development saved him from penetration through to the heart.

So pick up them weights if you're prone to being stabbed.

WoW....

I have to tell you thats what i was asking myself for quite some time. Untill i spoke with some people who have actually had to use these techniques in real life. There is no question thats the techniques they have learned saved their lives. Ofcourse you can never be 100% ready for everything... but you can come very close to that if you learn from the right instructor who actually knows and has used what he teaches.

I personally love this site: www.kravmagabootcamp.com I recently joined and have to tell you that they cover tons of different possible scenarios. Its amazing how many different situations you can be ready for.

also, I'm comfortable over there because i know an Instructor can't get more legitimate then the head of the Israeli Defense Forces Krav Maga school.

Hope this helps.
Thanks,
noob.

P.S- found this on youtube for ya.

Not a knife, but simiar principles. Ultimately you dont want to mess with anyone with a knife, even if you are highly skilled. Its a last resort kind of thing to go hand to hand against an opponent with a knife. A weapon is always a good idea, preferably a stick in confronting an knife weilding assailant........a stick or stick like object if a gun or running away isnt available to you.
