is it at all possible to train for knife disarming? knife fighting?

or is the knife attack scenario just far to unpredictable to successfully train for. has there been actual evidence/stories of people who have used such arts as kali, krav, systema to successfully disarm a person? in a lot of the videos i see of these arts, the people are drilling endlessly, but there is little to no resistance at all. can the knife attack scenario be actually something we can train for? i mean there are soooooo many ways someone can attack you with the blade. its not like boxing where you have the jab, cross, hook, upper cut or muay thai with the elbows + knees, kicks. if someone really wanted to cut you up they can slash you from any angle and stab you from any angle with any sort of method. basically, if someone just bum rushes you with a machete or k-bar and you have no where to run, are you pretty much fucked?

The most effective style in my opinion is .45 ACP

Dude, unless you've got a black belt in Chick-chuck-kaboom (shotguns or handguns) if you get in a knife fight, you're probably going to bleed.

Just know that going in, and try to do what you've been taught.

Some uber-ninja somewhere once said " (insert your martial art) works. Your (insert your martial art) doesn't."

If you get cut, don't go blaming "the Masters."

Now if your teacher's a dumb-ass...... just expect to die immediately.

Train in arnis but have never had a knife pulled on me. However, another student who delivers pizzas did. He had someone try to stab him and he was able to disarm him and run off. If you do train in arts such as arnis/eskrima/kali you will get a good base of how to defend yourself against a knife. However if the guy has skill, the chances of of you surviving arent good. You'll for sure at least get cut.

It's better to train for it in case you need it as a last resort. Filipino martial arts are a good bet. I did a bit of Kali

Interesting thread. Think we should move it to weapons though?

IMO

The only reasonable defense against someone with a knife (if you can't run away or pick up a weapon or your own) are kicks. If you are cornered with a knife push kick that motherfucker in the head or balls as hard as you can. Your legs should be longer then his arms so he can't stab you in the gut.

If you can't get away get an equalizer.

The Dog Brothers came out with a good DVD on this topic for law enforcement. Here's the trailer:

And by the way when drilling with the knife there is constant resistance and monitoring the knife. Although there are patterns to follow most drilling is done with no pattern so you don't know where the knife is going.

I agree, kicks are a good bet. Likely you'll be wearing shoes, which could give your feet a bit of protection against a knife (maybe), or maybe long pants like jeans, which could also help.

Better than waving your hands around trying to catch the person's wrist and getting sliced off fingers and cut up arms. Legs are abit more durable than hands and arms!

this is a good reason to have on steel toe boots, i do, you can kick them in the hand really hard and knock it out of the attackers hand or break his hand. still will be protecting your foot too.
