Cross-promotion Mistake - Nick Diaz

This is from MMATKO's coverage: Nick Diaz Vs Katsuya Inoue Fight Video DREAM 3 | MMA TKO

If I were the Dream promoters, I'm thinking that Gary Shaw and EliteXC (Proelite) pulled a fast one on me since Nick Diaz was wearing EliteXC-branded shirts and shorts before, during, and after his fight in Japan under the Dream banner.

This is why EliteXC and the UFC banned Affliction since neither liked advertising for a competing organization.

Yeah, I know that Proelite and Dream are partnering, but this just wouldn't sit well with me that a fighter from the other org is heavily branded with a competitor's logos.

The 2 orgs don't really fight over the same fans and i think that's why Dream has no problem with Diaz wearing EXC branded stuff.

I doubt that it's even possible to view Elite XC in Japan, it's hardly as though Elite XC will provide competition for DREAM in the Japanese market.

And like you said they have a partnership now, no harm done imo.

Well let's see at a Proelite/EliteXC event if Dream fighters are allowed to be branded with Dream splashed all over their fighters.

We know EliteXC won't allow Affliction apparel to be worn at their events by any fighter.

They're direct competition for the same PPV market(affliction/exc). The difference is Dream and EXC are different markets mostly. Even where the market crosses, us hardcore fans, only one is a PPV setup.

They have an agreement to share fighters and refs. I can't wait too have some of the killer Japanese refs here reffing for EXC. I'm sure when DREAM fighters fight in EXC, they will probably do the same thing.

Marketing is a huge issue in every business.

When you promote your competition in your event, using your own marketing dollars you dilute your own promotion.

All of these promotions spend millions of dollars trying to get brand visibility.

The why is for the same reason Affliction is banned in the UFC and EliteXC.

In the last Inside MMA, Josh Barnett and Tom (VP of Affliction) joked about "getting the word out" about the July 19 Affliction fight--marketing--and Josh joked about adding a flier to the Clip a Coupon/PennySaver Ads that you get in the mail. Tom from Affliction looked pretty wistful because marketing and gaining brand awareness about a promotion is important right now in this industry and it costs a lot of money, thus the push into CBS, NBC, FOX, Sports Illustrated, and Yahoo these days.

It's all about getting your brand established and for normal people to know that you exist.

Dream will need to reach into the Global market to be successful, that's why they signed with HDNet.

Maybe it was part of the deal. EliteXC lets Diaz fight for DREAM within 45 days of his EliteXC fight, but DREAM has to let him go into the ring representing EliteXC.

I have no clue, just taking a stab.
