YAMMA positivity
1. Travis Wiuff. Anybody who watched the show will remember who he is because you just saw him win 3 times in one night. The main problem with the UFC right now is getting guys over who only fight once or twice a year.
2. Production. Jeff Blatnnick may be a bit dry but you can't deny his knowledgeability of the sport. The ring announcer was totally different and I personally enjoyed him. Most importantly though, the time between fights and fighter introductions was noticeably shorter than other shows. I think this is a major annoyance on other shows, do I really need to see a long ass entrance for every fighter? Do I really need every single fight announced by Bruce Buffer and Co? I think time management on YAMMA was better than any show in recent memory.
3. Pat Smith/Oleg Taktarov. Both looked great.
4. They TRIED to do something about the clinches against the fence and the control of opponents against the fence. Then again as my girlfriend who's been watching for about 3 months said "yeah, or they could just use a ring". Okay they failed miserably, I prefer the ring myself.
5. Focus on heavyweights. Is the UFC becoming an all lightweight company? The heavier guys have always been the ones who are going to be the real big draws because "who's the toughest" gets more adrenaline going than "who's the best?". I think they've got a good idea that just like PRIDE the heavyweights are where your bread is buttered.
I think that they should merge their early UFC model with that of PRIDE. They could drop the YAMMA and go for a ring, go to one 10 minute round per fight giving fighters more time to work on a submission, setup their pay structure in a fomat like PRIDE where losing by knockout or submission will earn you more money than losing by decision, maybe bring in yellow cards even.
Tournaments can work, they create stars, and a ten minute round and different pay structure could get more exciting fights. Throw in a few old timers in there and get rid of the stupid YAMMA and get a ring and I think you'd have a unique product that is very interesting.
