It appears they substituted big words and a grumpy perspective for good writing skill on this one.
Fun fact: Jason Newsted was in a band called Flotsam and Jetsam before he joined Met@*lica.

I thought it was kinda "different", too.

I mean, quoting "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"?

We are MMA fans, damn it! We have no need for esoteric language art references in our articles!

Some of the wording on the article is a bit clumsy or nebulous, yes.

You think too highly of high school education.

Edit: or high school kids for that matter.

I'm a journalist with a degree in English and whilst I didn't have any problems reading it - it was definitely overly wordy in places just for the sake of it. Sometimes less is more, in my opinion.

An interesting read nonetheless.

It was easy to understand, but reminds me of a restaurant plate that is 75% garnish and 25% food. If you overuse the language, you reduce it. That was my experience with the article. Too bad because I think he is on point with the winners and losers and why.

I actually like Luke Thomas and bloodyelbow.com. But the problem here is not comprehension, it's that his writing style DOES NOT fit an MMA article at all.

To repair what ails them would require an untangling of a Gordian knot so complicated and interwoven Hercules himself would balk.
Really Luke? You would NEVER find this type of word choice in any other sports article. It's unnecessary. I can't really qualify myself without sounding like an arrogant asshole, but I'll just say I go to one of the top universities in the nation, and I think writing MMA articles like this is plain stupid.

It's way too verbose, and comes off as pretentious. You can write an MMA article and come off as intelligent without the philosophical ****phors.
