Strongmen and MMA
Does anyone else think the hype around Marius Pudzianowski is getting ridiculous. He's only 1-0, and yet people are predicting murder in his upcoming Tim Sylvia bout. This seems more than a touch reactionary. Do strongmen really have an advantage in MMA? Lifting deadweights is hardly fistfighting, and the two seem like distant cousins rather than bedfellows. I don't see how weightlifting translates into MMA at all, apart from base strength. Unless Timmy shows up with no cardio and on the back of a part-time two week camp, I expect him to bulldoze Pudzianowski.
Recent British strongman winner (and world finalist) Oli Thompson is struggling in his MMA career against some of the 2nd tier bloaters of the UK MMA scene. What on earth makes people think that Mariusz, or any decorated strongman for that matter, is going to take MMA by storm?

I think the novelty of it has led to too much hype.

I think it's more about publicity than anything else. Marius is a big strong mother fucker and i believe he has a background in Karate or a similar discipline. He looks the part, but Tim is no slouch even if he is the new Ricco Rodriguez (former UFC Champ turned dog shit taking small embarassing fights) and has the capability to outlast Marius. However, marius is very explosive, not your typical stongman to look at, i think the more he fights the more he will create believers.

Mariusz was the strongman with the best cardio and agility. He's like dynamite because compared to the other competitors he's a shitload of energy in a small body.
However then you remember "small for a strongman" happens to be 300 pounds.
Here's a big guy like 6'7 440 pound Dominic Filiou:
Žydrūnas Savickas is 6'3 385 pounds.
If you had to pick any strongman to make a bang, Mariusz would be it. It's too bad he's 33 though, big men always get injuries, especially when pushing the limits like WSM, if he started at 25 he'd be a bigger force.

It's just novelty really, there is almost no way that Marius could win this bout considering how he looked in his debut.
