Starting MMA

hello

This is my first post outside of the foreign language forum. I've been reading sherdog for a while now and I've been into MMA for years. While I don't currently technically train in strict MMA, I just keep doing the traditional martial arts that I started doing since my youth, that plus I took up boxing. I cross train as much as possible, I've learned some grappling in seminars and from rolling with some guys from one of my martial arts claseses who do judo/sambo, etc. I just tracked down one of the few (four at the most) bjj blackbelts in my country (México), he may be able to train me as soon as he recovers from a back injury.
What I want to know is how do you guy in the US, Canada or Britain, Brazil, etc. start out in MMA. There are many, many orgs., of which I assume some are quite accesible to anyone qualified, is this the case?

Here in Mexico City there are no events, no following of MMA, very few fans, and no MMA oriented schools/dojos. Everything I've read about MMA in the country has been about a few events happening in the northern cities which border the US, events in which very few Mexican fighters participate.

Is this the case for other countires as well?

Personally I'm working as hard as I can to first get good at boxing, I've made my uni's team and up to now i'm 0-1 in official matches.

any feedback?
