Rani did what bjj guys should all do
I think these days people think you need to be able to strike but I don't think thats true.
Rani fought perfectly against hominick. this is the way bjj fighters should fight.
think about it this way: if you go all out and bullrush your opponent, you are either going to get knocked out, or grab a hold of something to be able to clinch, takedown, or pull guard. Most probably you will not get knocked out. If you don't, and try to box with a superior striker, you'll just lose a decision.
nog vs. cro cop is another example of this strategy working.
people say, oh shit you are going to get knocked out shooting out like that. but seriously , when's the last time someone got knocked out shooting in like that? ralph vs mishima? sure, it happens, but usually it doesn't.
for example, if werdum went all crazy with shots on arlovski, he would have eventually gotten him down. the rounds are too short to waste time boxing with a superior striker.
freestyle shots are much more effective for grapplers because if you grab hold of a leg, the fight is going to the ground. if the guy doesnt sprawl, the guy goes down. if the guy sprawls, pull guard.
of course this style isn't for everyone, but for someone with the bjj skills of rani, and he knows he will win if the fight goes to the ground no matter what, i think he executed a perfect gameplan.
that said, i think people like bj penn should fight like this too. if bj penn went all crazy for shots and shit against gsp and hughes, he would've been on top working his jj against gsp and hughes and tapping them out. instead, he wastes time boxing in a short 5 min rnd and ends up getting taken down
