Depression is something that if you don't have it, you don't understand it. It's not the same as being bummed out or sad. It's not only perceiving your life as bad, but not seeing any hope of it ever getting better. There's no "tough it out" or "strap on a nut and be a man". You get treatment or you don't and it gets worse, period.
The thing about suicide is it doesn't make sense to anyone looking from the outside, but for the person who has reached that point, the despair blocks out all other considerations ie. family, friends, etc. People outside the situation try to apply their reasoning or understanding to it, but these assumptions are almost always wrong because suicide is a patently irrational act. It defies people to make sense of it because it doesn't make sense at all except to the person doing it.
Calling someone selfish or reciting trite cliches doesn't help anyone. I have all the sympathy in the world for his family, they are the ones left shattered in the wake of this. It will be a whole lot better to support them and help them in their time of need, rather than passing an uninformed judgement on this guy.
Peace.
