'Open Guard' rule in Cage Rage ???
I just watched Cage Rage 17 which, by the way, was an excellent event. At the beginning of the fights the referee said that there are to be no kicks to the head of 'downed' opponents unless he calls 'open guard'. Then, obviously, if he DOES call 'open guard' kicks to the head of 'downed' opponents ARE allowed. Can someone please explain to me exactly what 'open guard' means in this context?
P.S. Sorry if I am a bit of a retard.

Is this rule new to Cage Rage?
I've seen a few CR events but the last event was the first time I saw that rule. I love it!

darkmike, thanks for explaining that to me. I watched Cage Rage 17, and I thought it was excellent. By the way, if you take into acount the total land mass area of the world, it is about a one in 42,000 chance that you replied to my post. Because, amazingly enough, I live in Cornwall, UK as well !!! (I live in Falmouth). They say 'it's a small world', don't they? You and my 15 year old nephew are the only two people I know of in Cornwall who are interested in MMA. I am 45 and have arthritis in my hip due to a motorcycle accident, but my nephew is 15 and he is interested in doing some MMA training. So if you know of any clubs etc in our area, I would be grateful if you'd let me know. Thanks mate.
All the best,
Old_Fogey. (Mark)
P.S. I am a collector of MMA DVDs, so please PM me if your colection is not completely up to date.

the rule was brought in at cage rage 15 i think. i'm not 100% sure tho. which ever event they had first with the canvas with the black line on the inside.
i think cagerage has one of the best rule sets in the buisness

Thanks for the reply.
I went back and checked CR 15 and they do have that line around the cage. Zelg actually kicks the head of his downed opponent in his fight as well so the rule at least dates back to that event. I had just never heard the term "open guard rule" before.

it gives the best of both worlds i guess. safety for the fighters and, when the time is appropriate, good action and more possibilities for the fans and the fighters.
i love it.

I dont like that rule, referees shouldn't be involved in a fight that much for my taste. When one fighter is standing and the other one is down both seem to wait and start to look on the referee to see if he calls it. Either allow them or not.
