Title nine is going to get rid of another mens college sport to have women smacking each other around..... and I couldn't be happier.

That's How I'm thinking it was also.If Ham can develop a good all around takedown defense, and learn more grappling defense, she could probably be a good sprawl and brawl fighter.Right now she just needs more training.Only 2 fights in and she's already faced the champ and another contender in the division.

There aren't any formal, universal weight classes yet, though 105.8lbs and 135lbs have pretty much crystalized, with all sorts of catchweights and what not in between. Beyond 135, its pretty much 'openweight' competition.

For the most part the rules are similiar to whatever the Men's division may be, three five-minute rounds, etc, but in certain places there are particulars in place:

- Smackgirl doesn't hold strikes to the face when on the ground as standard, as well as only allows 30 seconds of time on the ground before a stand-up. All fights except for special bouts and championships last 2 rounds, and if the latter, three.

- The state of California only allows three minute rounds in women's competition. No one yet knows why.

- Pancrase and DEEP do not allow strikes to the face, but don't enforce a time limit on the ground.

The thing about Fujii is that while demonstratively elite, she's largely untested against the best. Tavares was a challenging win, but since then one can only really look at wins over Misaki Takimoto, Masako Yoshida, and Tama-Chan as evidence of her abilities, and those three are middle-tier. The fault lies in her body frame (which of course isn't her fault), which doesn't allow her to cut to 48kg (105lbs), the nearest competitive division) since she's shredded as fuck fighting at 113/14 pounds. Thus her going up in weight to fight 130-ish Tama-Chan and Yoshida having to meet Fujii at weight for their fight. The only real opponent in proximity to her natural weight is Yuka Tsuji. That fight, according to Josh Barnett, is talked about all the time in Japan as the MEGABOUT of women's mma, and perhaps or that reason, much like the formerly anticipated Cro-Cop/Fedor bout, won't happen anytime soon.

Hmm, didn't know that.

Another option is that her boyfriend can get a bullhorn.

derUbermensch thanks for the info. That sucks that it's limited to 105, 135, and just openweight divisions. They probably need a few more divisions.

A couple of years ago Hook n' Shoot used weight classes. Let me think if I can remember correctly...

170: Heavyweight
150: Light Heavyweight
135: Middleweight
125: Welterweight.

I'm not sure about the names.

During the Watanabe fight when Hisae had her down she was coached by and followed word-for-word her boyfriend's instruction, her boyfriend being a pro MMA fighter and knowing a bit about grappling. Call Beatdown one day and ask Jordan Breen about it, he knows the guy.

Re weightclasses, I think Bodog have 125 and 135 for the moment. Since that's rapidly becoming the place to be for the top female fighters, I think we'll see the 125 division crystalize over the coming months. Fuji should have a few more potential opponents at that weight, anyhow.
