Source is The Korean Herald:

Korean K-1 fighter Choi Hong-man will undergo four weeks of army training starting next week to begin his two-year compulsory military service, the sport's local agency was quoted as saying by Yonhap News Agency.

Choi, who converted in 2005 to the K-1 mixed martial art league from Korea's traditional wrestling art of "ssirum," is likely to serve as an assistant in a public facility after the training, K-1's Seoul agency said in a statement.

All Korean men must serve in the military for at least two years barring physical conditions that hamper them from doing so. Those ineligible for physically challenging military activities may also serve in government-run facilities under military regulations.

Choi, who reportedly suffers from a medical condition associated with excessive muscle tissue growth, will be banned from sporting activities while he serves the duty, the FEG agency said, adding that he plans to return to his athletic career after the service ends.

Choi, a former ssirum champion, made a splash in 2005 when he hopped over to K-1, instantly winning the World Grand Prix that year in Seoul.

The 28-year-old, who begins his army training next Monday, has also tapped into local entertainment business as he starred in a number of television shows and recently released a rap single with a local model.

I am happy. I think they should make him the guy that walks across a mine field armed with only a Rambo knife in order to find the mines.

It is mean, but I can't help myself.

A lot of male celebrities put it off until their late 20's - the guys from H.O.T. (really well-known boy band that is now disbanded) didn't join until they were around 26-28. I guess the government is pretty lenient if you have "extenuating circumstances," like if you are busy working or whatnot. My dad didn't go until his mid-late 20's since he had to help put food on the table for his family - he eventually went in as a tank driver.

Glad to see he's not going to be GI - can you imagine if North Korea invaded the next day and he had to fight? JFC, it would be like being asked to shoot the side of a barn or air.

Since I'm second-generation, I don't have to serve, so I wouldn't know this: When you say "sporting events", do you mean any and all? Not even stuff that taps into your military training like grappling (Judo probably the most commonplace, followed by Wrestling) tournaments or Boxing? Because I've seen some military personnel compete in TKD matches before...

Choi made a lot of money in K-1 so it seems like he should be able to buy his way out of it.

The Spirit 16 card isn't spectacular, but it looks ok. Whi Seung Bae is an exiting scrapper and that's a good match up for him against Murata. An Sang Il is finally gettig a step up in competition. i alway like watching Kim Haeng Ki fight, so i'll be there
