Icon2 Modern MMA's First Death (Douglas Dedge)

RIP Douglas Dedge

A very unfortunate turn of events occurred during the third fight of the 1998 International Super Challenge in Kiev, Ukraine on 3/16/98.

During the match, Douglas Dedge fought Yevgeni Zolotarev… the official result of the fight was listed as Zolotarev def. Dedge via submission due to strikes. Dedge died two days after the fight due to injuries. As a side note, Zolotarev has not fought again since that match. Rumors surfaced that Dedge was advised by a doctor not to fight due to a prior injury (concussion or subdural hematoma), but fought anyway. The strikes he endured during his match at the International Super Challenge may have caused those prior injuries to become much worse eventually leading to his death.

Written accounts of the fight seem to vary greatly, but here is the actual fight footage: http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...74140296314666

That's very sad. I had heard about that before, but had never seen the fight.

And I'd hate to say it, but i don't know if I would consider that "modern MMA". Those guys didn't even have gloves on...

Yeah, regulation and sanctioning have been a good thing for the sport. That's the best thing I think Dana's been able to accomplish during his reign.

Agreed. I understand fighters have the "never quit" drive, but they need to consider the consequences of fighting injured. Luckily, we have doctors associated with the organizations now who screen the fighters before, during, and after their fights.

That guy did not die due to a MMA Match, he barely even took any shots! The fight was properly stopped. He made a bad decision!

Also this is not modern mma!

next if it was in the states he may have had better medical treatment!
