Icon10 EliteXC more WWE than MMA

For all of those out there who continuously bash Dana White I think you should take time and think about how great the UFC really is and be happy we have it. Be happy we have Dana who may be a ego maniac but can still run a successful organization at the same time unlike EliteXC president Gary Shaw who is the phoniest marketing strategist since P.T. Barnum himself! Well, actually the Barnum & Bailey circus may have more credibility after last night's debacle!

I watched EliteXC last night because I thought the card looked solid and plus I love MMA regardless. The last time I watched XC I thought the card was alright, but the production was insanely cheesy to say the least. The whole dancing chick thing was annoying and the announcing was terrible as well, but the fights were decent so who cared. Then came last night!

Gary Shaw's Elite XC gave us:
  • A guy came bursting through the fighters entrance in a sprint to the cage where he proceeded to do gymnastics! This set the tone for a strange evening ahead!

  • Bill Goldberg announcing who has no clue what he is even talking about!

  • They promoted Kimbo like the second coming of Mike Tyson and fed him a 10-10 Bo Cantrell who actually tapped before the ref stopped it! This poor guy Cantrell was looking for the exit the moment he took one look into Kimbo's eyes! The Kimbo vs. Cantrell fight reminded me of Mike Tyson vs. Peter McNeely and it ended as such!
However, the dancing gymnast, the cheesy cheerleaders, no WW title match, Goldberg's announcing and the joke that was Kimbo's opponent all paled in comparison to what would happen in the Main Event however! The Diaz vs. Noons match would prove the night to be what it looked like which was more of a circus than a sport!

So Diaz gets cut by a Noons knee and has a bit of blood streaking down his face which was impairing his vision. Now Diaz must survive and make it into the 2nd round so his corner could fix the cut and stop the bleeding. The bell sounds and Diaz can now get his corner to work on the cut! Then shockingly you here "FIGHT'S OVER!" Without coming over and asking Diaz if he can see and wished to continue the idiot ass Dr. stops the fight! Obviously he forgot that he was looking at a "fighter" who's sport involves getting punched and kicked in the face! A sport that involves cut's and thus "cutmen" to fix them! For this Doc, in the EliteXC it was simple, "You're cut, you're bleeding, you can't fight." What a fiasco! Could you imagine the Diaz fight being stopped in the UFC with that cut? Hell no!

So while everybody gives Dana White hell, please consider the alternative! Without PRIDE we have the IFL & EliteXC out there, M-1 possibly may give us the alternative, but for right now I will take a ego maniacal Dana White over a friendly more subdued but incompetent Gary Shaw any day of the week!

What about you?

There have been a few things I have thought while watching their events, that you mentioned. I do think there was some definite weirdness to their events. All in all, the fights were fun to watch and thats all i really cared about.

I do think the dancing girls could be more coordinated but I don't think it's completely a bad thing. The worst part of the event was Goldberg's post fight interviews. Other than that, the production as a whole was just as good if not better than the UFC.

I agree with a lot of what you said. Poor announcing, cheesy production, mismatches. Showtime has both helped and hurt MMA with its attempts. UFC on Spike has been better. On a recent eliteXC non title card they had Al Bernstein, one of the best boxing announcers, but he admittedly knows nothing about MMA. From what I have seen on the internet, Kimbo Slice will be destroyed by any top 10 heavyweight. And last nights fight was a waste of time, Cantrell wanted no part of that fight.

Solid post. One of the few longer type posts here worth reading.

What an idioitic post. Like EliteXC can control the doctors decision...
And I have never seen WWE, it is very childish to put down something you do not understand. Many people like entertainment, that is why they loved Pride. I am one of those people.
Sad to see that being one of the Dana PR guys gets you a blue belt.

Good post.

Antonio Silva awkwardly dancing down the entrance ramp is something that sticks out in my mind from last night.

So because I thought the EliteXC was a joke I'm a Dana PR boy now?

I cannot fault EliteXC for the stoppage but had there been a doctor like Dr. Margaret Goodman ringside the fight would have continued. However it is state regulatory and not EliteXC fault.

However everything else falls on their shoulders!

Let me tell you something, if Dana White were to sign Kimbo and then have him fight Bo Cantrell he would be bashed so much it would crash the Shedog forums!
