Saved by the Bell...
This is in reference to this past weeks fight. I read a lot of post about the fight (Tait & Josh), but wanted to make a separate point and propose a solution to the 'saved by the bell syndrome' we see in MMA.
I propose that the bell cannot end a round/fight (if a fighter is in emanate danger or in the middle of a submission attempt) until a neutral position is acquired. Nobody should be 'saved by the bell' if they are getting arm-barred, choked, knee-barred, GnP’ed from the mount, etc.
If someone is just holding guard, circling from the feet, (basically any neutral position) then the round CAN end, but if someone has the back and is pounding away, I don't think the round should end (if would have to be a judgment call by the Ref.).
The person in the less advantageous position should be required to gain a neutral position before the round ends.
This would allow a more realistic aspect to the fight and avoid someone almost getting choked out (then saved by the bell) and being able to start back standing again in the next round after water, catching their breath, etc. It would also prevent someone from waiting out the end of a round, while they are taking a beating.
I understand we run into problems with 'time' if someone has a good position and can't finish...other than that, I don't see any downfalls to this methodology.
What do you think?
