The Ultimate Fighter 3 Preview-
By Amy Robinson (acemma86@yahoo.com)

The third installment in The Ultimate Fighter (“TUF”) series has a lot to live up to. The initial season of the show, was an instant phenomenon and ratings hit, that propelled the UFC to heights in mainstream popularity, never before seen in the sport. With arguably the two best light-heavyweight fighters in the world in Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture as coaches, and a cast of competitors that included top prospects like Forrest Griffin, Chris Leben, Diego Sanchez, and Mike Swick. This balance of veteran coaches, and hungry young gun contestants yielded not only great fights, (including one of the greatest fights in UFC history; the light heavyweight final slugfest between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar), but dramatic personal encounters between the fighters that made for extraordinary television.

Season 2, was very eagerly anticipated in the mma world. With champion coaches in Rich Franklin and Matt Hughes, and another crop of outstanding young fighters, such as Joe Stevenson, Josh Burkman, Mike Whitehead, and Rashad Evans, TUF 2 looked to be just as good as the original. And although the second run of TUF was solid, some lackluster fights and the absence of any real interpersonal drama, season 2 definitely wasn’t the amazing sequel everyone had hoped it would be.

Which brings us to now, on the eve of the debut of the third season of TUF, with the explosive first run of the show, and the expectations of rebounding from the second, all signs point to TUF 3 as delivering what may be the best season yet. The coaches; two former UFC champions, two MMA legends, and two men who hate each other with every fiber of their being. TUF 3 will be the stage to showcase the most intensive feud in mixed martial arts history, that of Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz. Not only will the two have to deal with their hatred of each other, but they’ll have to deal with leading their teams in competition with one another.

Another element in this already combustible situation is UFC president Dana White, who will be hosting the show this time around. It’s no secret that the head of the biggest fight organization in the US is a rather brash and abrasive character. And although one would assume the president of the company would serve as an impartial mediator between the two rivals of Shamrock and Ortiz, that may not be the case. Dana and Tito also, share a hatred for each other, the two have been at odds in business deals and in the media for several years now, and I doubt things will cool down on the show, which adds another component to this interesting situation.

And of coarse there is the biggest and most important part of the show, the fighters. This season will once again showcase middleweight and light-heavyweight competitors. 18 fighters in all, 9 per weight class, will vie for 2 coveted contracts with The Ultimate Fighting Championship. This seasons’ crop of new UFC hopefuls features a good mix of more seasoned fighters, and newer budding stars. Plus, an international flavor, with fighters coming from not just the US, but Canada and Great Britain, as well. The cast for season 3 appears to be an interesting blend of fighters with unique personalities, fascinating background stories, and solid fighting credentials to boot, which should make for a very exciting season.

The first episode of TUF 3 will debut on Thursday, April 6th, at 10pm eastern, on Spike TV, immediately following a live Ultimate Fight Night event. The finale of this season is scheduled for June, and will be when the highly anticipated rematch of the season 3 coaches, Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock will take place. In addition, to the 2 middleweight and light-heavyweight final bouts that will decide which fighters will become the newest additions to the UFC roster.

In a few changes for this season, the duration of the fights on TUF will go back to two, 5 minute rounds, as in the first season. This is said to be so they will be able to showcase more of what happens outside of the octagon. And this time around the coaches were allowed to bring in their own assistant coaches, one of which is already known to be Pride and Abu Dhabi veteran Dean Lister, who will work in Tito’s camp. As for what we can expect to see on episode one; the coaches will evaluate the fighters, select teams, and the first fight of the new season will take place, as two middleweight competitors will face off inside the octagon.

So, in preparation for a new season of every fight fans favorite reality show, I wish you happy viewing, and don’t forget to continue to support the sport!
