US helicopter crashes in Iraq, 13 dead
A US chopper crashed in Iraq earlier today, killing all 13 aboard. In a separate incident, 2 army guys and a marine were killed. RIP.
This is a very high death toll for a single day, and this is not going to make Bush's insipid surge plan any more popular.
Do you guys think there will be any repercussions from this copter crash? With Bush's state of the union on Tuesday, the pressure on him to get out of Iraq will be higher than ever..

It will be interesting to see if the pressure on Bush to not send more troops/to start getting the troops out of Iraq increases after this. Me thinks that if there is one more big attack like this between now and the State o' the Union speech, that the public won't tolerate sending more troops to die.

I read that an Iraqui farmer said that the helicopter was fired upon from the ground.

I think we gotta look at the whole region. From an American perspective, we should be pressing Israel to get out of the Golan Heights in return for Syria to 1) agree to make a permanent peace with Israel 2) to stop funding Hezbollah and Hamas and 3) to stop sending fighters into the US. We may have to sweeten the pot with some financial incentives, but getting Syria on the sidelines would be a major help in securing the Middle East that Bush envisioned when he chose to go into Iraq in the first place..

The yahoo article made a special mention of the fact that the press release explicitly did not mention friendly fire or bad weather, which for all intents and purposes is an admission that the copter was shot down by insurgents..

Man i hate to hear that. That is really sad RIP.
I am not sure there will be any kind of political ramification from this, its just a tragic event. Bush's speech he better hit a home run though. COngress can't really stop the troop surge(well they could pull funding but they wont). All of what the dems are doing now is more of a symbolic opposition to it. Its going to happen. With that being said we should kill that fuck AL sadr with these additional troops and squash the militias.
