Of course there are going to be some positives, and if you look for them you can find them. But honestly, who the fuck cares if they can sell brawtwurst in Baghdad. All I care about is getting Iraq stable and bringing our troops home. Untill that appears to be a possibilty I could care less about some Baghdad grocery store owner.
And lets not act like Iraq was a Nazi Concentration camp. Under Sadaams rule Iraqi people had quite a bit of freedom. Women had good jobs, kids could paly outside and for most there was peace. Its not as if Iraq was like Darfur or Zimbabwe. So why should we be happy that college students can hang out at the corner store? They could before we went in.

You gotta love Saddam sympathizers.
Anyway, good job pointing out that some parts of the country are ok and others are not. Gee whizzz, that doesn’t sound like any other country on Earth does it?
Look, I don’t think you’ll find anyone who says Iraq is in great shape. As a whole, it’s in worse shape than most. The thing I find interesting is that people refuse to believe there’s even a chance things could “normalize” there. Much of that is our fault. Our people have become accustomed to fast results and live with extremely short term memories. Look no further than Barak Obama. Compare his thoughts on Iraq from 2004 (see my sig) to today.
Changing an entire country’s political infrastructure, moving from a dictatorship to a democracy and trying to get entirely different factions of people to find common ground is a process that should take well over a decade.
We’re finally starting to see progress. The timing of it, while painful due to the lives that have been lost & the astonishing cost, makes sense given the scope of work involved. All the more reason to believe that a total withdrawal now would be catastrophic. Many have taken notice and it’s the primary reason Obama will change his tune on this matter and McCain will stick to the position he’s had all along.
