because HS sports are just as out of proportion in regards to emphanence (sp?) on mens sports compared to womens.
I do understand your whole post and am sympathetic to those points.

You'd think for how much students pay per credit/unit that they'd be adding 30 more sports.
This is very sad indeed. Alot of great wrestlers came from ASU.

Cl****l i understand your a wrestling guy, but its trimming the fat and mens wrestling just ain't getting it done.

That would be to logical, this is suppose to be America where the best of the best succeed, Title 9 is now making competition harder and harder for certain Mens sports because of the limited schools with the programs and less and less scholarships. Everyone is cutting these programs because they look at it as extra weight that can be dropped off. Wrestlers bust their ass off to make a College D1 Team and here you have colleges looking for woman to make quotas? What the fuck is wrong with America, I cannot wait until the day everyone who is so PC gets their ass kicked when people wake up and realize there is a difference between equality and what is happening in America right now which is going to have an overall negative effect on America.

I cannot wait until we don't need Quotas to achieve equality.
Oh and for you to act like a highschool wrestler works any harder or puts out any more effort than say a highschool volleyball player is also insulting!

Basically, wrestling has no counterpart in the female world. Thats why wrestling gets the ax most often. There is much more to it than that obviously but you know what I am getting at.

Unless you are telling me that a significant number of women do sports outside of high school, HS numbers do matter.
To wrestle at ASU, you have to be a HS standout on an interstate basis, being the best in Arizona (for instance) is not nearly good enough
Thanks for empathizing with me. It makes college wrestling less interesting when all the talent is in two conferences - the Big 10 and the Big 12 (Big 12 down to 5 teams). EWL and EIWA are good, but have taken blows as well
Wrestlers are not the spoiled athletes that the revenue sports are - they can't be. IMO, has to be the hardest sport to get a scholarship in these days. You literally have to be one of the best in the nation to get one and if you lose your slot on the team, you can lose your scholarship with it.
To answer your question, wrestling gets the boot for 2 reasons: 1) they only have a male program - most other sports have both (tennis, baseball/softball, soccer, swimming, basketball) and 2) They aren't making the school money. Football is also for men, but since it makes money for them, they are willing to incur the additional costs of complying with title 9 (add womens programs at a similar cost)

Gotcha, that makes more sense. Do you think its also because of the lack of money wrestling brings in? Also womens wrestlilng is becoming much more popular, so maybe that will help.

Womans wrestling becoming more popular? Well more woman are wrestling, but the fans are the same.
#1. Most Athletic Directors that are not in the Mid West do not understand Wrestling, so they see it as a money sink and are easy to drop it without recognizing what Wrestling takes - Athleticism, Dedication, Difficulty, Tradition etc.
#2. Eliminate a 20 spot Wrestling team and it frees up money, space, and the Title 9 quota.
#3. Wrestling is not a 'team sport' , it has a fanbase by the people who understand it. It is a rough sport and can look violent at times when things get heated, it is physical and when you don't understand it, it seems to fit in with 'Boxing and Judo' which are not considered 'college sports' (They like happy sports like baseball and softball)
#4. What counters Wrestling? There is already no counter sport to Football for woman (Plus Football requires a lot of money), so you have Football as a guys sport which is heavily funded and then you will need a womans only LaCross or some shit to make up for it.. see why they cut Wrestling in this argument? It doesn't make as much money as football, and there is no counter to it, even though Woman can be in wrestling the ratios don't add up so it doesn't count for Title 9.
#5. Other sports... same thing basically as #4 , you can have Womans track and Mens track, Mens Soccer or Womans Soccer, even though Woman can wrestle (ASU has a nation womans champion) it does not count as a womans sport because the ratio needs to be 50% 50%. Thats why Wrestling gets the boot, and hard dedicated Wrestlers are wearing thin because of the lack of opportunity. If you are a College Wrestler, you are the top 1% of college athletes.
