If Isreal had never existed the US would be better of because the arab states would not feel antagonzied by the US supporting Isreal.

No oil boycotts, less wild oil price swings due to instablity in the region.

This is pretty much worthless to me seeing as we also support just about every autocratic state in the region from Saudi Arabia to Egypt. Democracy is certainly not a prerequisite for our support.

never said it was. and certainly such insight is very common today. it was not viewed so clearly prior to 911 and the invasion of Iraq.

seems very simple, but as noted above the people of the arab states are the ones who are antagonized, both by the palestinian issue but also, importantly by their own "regimes" armed to the teeth with US ordinance.

the oil issue is separate from all this and has more to do with a weaker dollar and slow US economy that an embargo like the 1970s.
