How many times have you been electrocuted again? I don't think you were doing it right.

waterboarding inflicts fear.

Torture inflicts pain and/or permanant injury.

Not the same.

Since you want to whip out the dictionary

Torture- a: anguish of body or mind

Now you might wish to argue that waterboarding does not cause mental anguish, but when someone feels they are drowning, they tend to suffer mental anguish

Quote:
Water-boarding or mock drowning, where a prisoner is bound to an inclined board and water is poured over their face, inducing a terrifying fear of drowning clearly can result in immediate and long-term health consequences. As the prisoner gags and chokes, the terror of imminent death is pervasive, with all of the physiologic and psychological responses expected, including an intense stress response, manifested by tachycardia, rapid heart beat and gasping for breath. There is a real risk of death from actually drowning or suffering a heart attack or damage to the lungs from inhalation of water. Long term effects include panic attacks, depression and PTSD. I remind you of the patient I described earlier who would panic and gasp for breath whenever it rained even years after his abuse.
It isn't just mental, it is also a physical torture

The dictionary definition of torture you cite clearly takes into account the use employed in everyday hyperbolic speech. "waiting for my exam score was torture." "listening to her sing is torture." "watching that show is torture." torture in the context of interrogation is not the same sort of usage.....

Or maybe it is to you guys. Maybe you think that playing eminem for captured terrorists is too cruel. I dunno.

But even granting your tortured expansion of the word "torture" (look it up, that's a proper usage, too) frightening someone into thinking he might drown is not the same as maiming, scarring, burning, electro shock, genital mutilation, or thumbscrews. psychological anguish just ain't the same.

As for your quote, those are still examples of psych damage. and the same sorts of lasting problems can come from any stressful situation. That doesnt make the damage physical. I know you have access to a dictionary. look up the word physical.

How bout this: given a choice, which would you choose be done to you?

Sooo....what do you call it when electricity passes through your body? In the vernacular, it is getting electrocuted.

maybe, if by vernacular you mean where a word is misused enough times that it takes on a new meaning. though I doubt it. Usually the dictionary will take that into account and give the wrong usages as well (like "flouted" being conflated with "flaunted").

I'd use some form of shock or jolt to describe receiving or giving an electricla current, i guess. depends on the context. But precise words matter in my line of work. It's not a big deal.
