Surprise surprise Bush cronyism strikes again

WASHINGTON - The American Bar Association rated one of President Bush's judicial nominees "not qualified" Wednesday, prompting a call from a liberal group for the president to withdraw the Mississippi lawyer's nomination.

A panel of the nation's largest lawyers group voted unanimously to give its lowest rating to Michael Wallace, Bush's nominee for the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Wallace is the first appeals court nominee in 25 years to receive a unanimous 'not qualified' rating from the ABA,"

And what, exactly, is his tie to Bush?

"A constitutional lawyer who once worked as a clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Wallace has close ties to Mississippi Republican Sen. Trent Lott. The senator hired the attorney to help him with the impeachment of then-President Bill Clinton.

As an aide to Lott in the early 1980s, Wallace intervened to prevent the Justice Department from sending federal inspectors to Mississippi jails.

Wallace also helped to write a letter that Lott sent to then-President Ronald Reagan urging the White House to side with segregated private schools in a case that involved then-segregated Bob Jones University in a case before the Supreme Court. The university was arguing that it had a right to take federal tax deductions.

Wallace's involvement in those issues was raised when Reagan nominated him to the board of the Legal Services Corp. in 1983.

"Wallace has several serious civil rights problems, even going back to his work for Trent Lott," said Leslie Prole, Washington director of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund."

Uh, Bush nominated him?

Bush nominated someone that was Trent Lott's bitch back before people had a problem with Lott being racist. Ironically, he nominated him for a seat where Bush's nominee in 2004 was denied due to political bias, but Bush let him serve for a year anyway.

Being nominated by someone does not make you a crony.

It might be due to the fact that the ABA has a liberal bias.

Quote:
Here Clinton nominees fared strikingly better than Bush-1 nominees. Some 65% of Clinton appointees without judicial experience were unanimously rated "Well Qualified" compared with only 17% of the Bush-1 appointees. Controlling for credentials, my study found that Clinton nominees had more than 10 times better odds of getting the ABA's highest rating than similarly credentialed Bush appointees. In short, being nominated by Bill Clinton was a stronger positive variable than any other credential or than all other credentials put together.

I agree. Even though i think Bush is horrible and does engage in cronyism(sp?) this is not that type of situation this time around.

If having a liberal bias makes them realistic, then yes.
