We all choose our jobs. Why does my girlfriend who BARELY graduated High School make about $75,000(US) working as a waitress at HOOTERS. That's about twice as much as a high school teacher who has a Masters degree.
Not to mention I pull in almost $100,000 working as a prison guard. Both of which require no degree, and not much experience.
You could even go further, what about Actors, Professional Athletes, Models, etc? Why not complain about how much these people make?

What the fuck inspired this post? Its a (near) free market, the amount they get paid is a result of how much people are willing to take to do the job.
Many would say they should be paid more because we still have a shortage of troops.

This is ridiculous. I made a whopping $900 a month as a private, and $1600 four years later. I took a steep pay cut when I joined, and a huge pay raise (making $14 an hour doing construction, not exactly a king's ransom) when I got out. I came ome from a six month deployment on combat pay and tax exemption with a grand total of about $10K. You wouldn't want to live like we did (navy ships, roof tops and piles of dirt, MREs, shitting your brains out for weeks) for that amount of money.
The idea that the military is overcompensated is just insane.

Don't forget, this doesn't apply to the threadstater. He was Air Force. I bet if he was Infantry(Army or Marines) he wouldn't be saying shit about being "overcompensated".
For the amount of hours I worked; if I was paid minimum wage, I would have made 4-5 times what my salary was. Not including overtime.

Good point. I certainly never felt overcompensated sleeping on the ground in the rain, running around in the heat, going weeks without showers, getting mortared, going days without real sleep, etc. I fucking wish we got paid by the hour back then!

Hmmm...
I made about $35,000 in seven months in Iraq.
I worked 12-hour shifts, seven days a week. I had a few days off, but I had several days of working 17-hour days too, so I'll call that even.
210 days times 12 hours is 2,520 hours.
Divide my pay by the hours I worked and I was paid $13.90 an hour, straight time, not figuring in any overtime. If this was based on a civilian payscale the hourly would figure to be significantly less.
This is for IT work and comms work. It's significantly low for pay in my field.
...and we get shot at.
I suppose next we'll hear how teachers are overcompensated.
