The all-night-long power grid represents a direct relationship with industrial activity, automotive activity, and any other activities that use electric power. All these activities are not pretty Christmas lights for the kids ... or cool light shows for the stoners... they represent "cancer" to the planet Earth. And present the highest levels of heat trapping gases: The USA being the major culprit.
The best analogy is, the area with the high levels of light indicates spreading cancer - which is harbinger of the impending doom of the ecosystem, all its species, (e.g. the worlds frogs are all dying off, they are the indicator species of eco-health). Ultimately the major species that's causing it, the apex predator, will die in the end ... humans.
Sadly, areas like India are starting to become lit up like Europe and the USA. Not even close yet to the brightness and intensity of the USA but one day if they stay on this path it will be.
Post-industrial Human activity is the root of the disease. White humans are the ones most responsible for engineering, and through democratic marketing, spreading the contagion.
The main skin color of the humans that are causing the most of it on Earth is, white. If you look around at the rest of the planet that is mostly in the dark at night you can see it's in areas like Africa, South America, and Eurasia. Populated by dark skin colour peoples. The peoples you Americans and Europeans all call backward, third world, impoverished losers. When in actuality it is you, the all-night-long power-sucking vampires of the planet who are impoverishing the Earth. The party won't last my friends. You think your technology will save us? The Earth laughs in our faces. We are at a tipping point in human history. All the people who think of themselves as the “have-mores” and laugh at the poor, “have-nots” are the true cancers of this world. The planet and nature has no ability though to discriminate between you and the rest of the people. Nothing you own will save you; not your houses, your SUV's, your bank accounts, your guns, your medications...nothing. Once this ship tips, the party is OVER.
You are either a part of the disease or a part of the solution. You either deny the truth or accept this disease exists and start doing something about it. All the vampires will keep denying it, because well, they are vampires. Are you one of the vampires? Do you kid yourself and think no way man I am a law-abiding family man, and I’m not buying into this BS, I isn’t no vampire!?
Keep kidding yourself then. Your kids will have nothing but a world sucked dry by your slothful ways, greedy soul, and mental apathy.

The earth doesn't have a nighttime. I will assume that this is the compliation of regional nighttimes. But maybe not - you are likely rephrasing someone else's argument and passing it off as your own. Since it is from imagebucket, we don't know if this picture is objective or who created it.
The US has almost 10x Canada's population, when you factor that in, you Canadians look like total pigs. But that's not the point you are trying to make of course
You are saying that whites are less environmentally conscious? (except for the Japanese, since that country is also very bright in this picture) I am sure the dark areas of Africa have nothing to do with poorness; the impoverished are just more committed to the environment (you can't be that dumb).
You are a master of subtlety "Not even close yet to the brightness and intensity of the USA"

Quick to make assumptions huh? ;) The picture is originally from NASA. And it's from photobucket probably because photobucket is one of the common image hosting sites. I can't confirm whether or not NASA approves of bandwidth theft, but let's assume they don't, which could explain why it's on photobucket.
Ofcourse it's a compilation of each region at night, that much doesn't even need to be said. Regardless, the photo is officially labeled "Earth at Night".

Dipshit, read what I wrote - I assumed that this was reliable, but the poster's motive here (and in every other thread he posts in) is obvious. How was I supposed to know this was a picture from NASA? He doesn't say it. "Bandwidth theft" - get over yourself idiot
For instance (with this TS), with India we need to consider their population, but in pointing out how white North America is, it's appropriate to just conclude it is mainly due to the US .

I don't care about the underlying motives of him (or you for that matter). How were you supposed to know it's from NASA? Well you could do what I did and look for more images like it. I happened to come upon that one at the nasa.gov domain. And bandwidth theft is a real issue, many sites don't like it when you link stuff directly from their domain, which is one reason public image hosting exists.
If you have a bone to pick with him that's fine, I don't know either of you, so have at it.

Actually thread starters should source their material. I never said it wasn't accurate, just said it might be and corrected his comment that is was "the earth at night" Trying to verify the source of an uploaded photo isn't something I tried to do even though you say you were able to
My other comments directed at him are perfectly appropriate; some times he uses gross and per capita in making his point. His conclusion was meant to single out the US when Canadians are at least as guilty here. If we adjust for the fact that they have 1/10th our population, I imagine they would look very, very white

This isnt a white versus the world debate. i merely point out that the have-more's (mainly white people) sit around and consider themselves to be so benevolent and educated, and think themselves defenders of liberty blah blah blah, and also their corporations try and make shit up about how they can just create more technology to solve the issues, but the fact is its mostly rich countries dominated by WASP's that are reaping the short term benefits of 24hour industrial power, while their gluttony sows the seeds of the rest of the worlds destruction.
and i am a white person too. but im not so stupid and blind to not realise that we are causing all this. making bad examples to the rest of the world who think they can achieve this "american dream" when in reality the dream is nothing more than the shadow of a nightmare.
I sold my car. i walk, ride bike.
i purchase stuff thats made locally so it doesnt need to be shipped thousand of miles to me.
i use as little power as possible turning off all lights when not needed. and i recycle as much as i can. i dont own many possessions either. i dont just buy shit for the sake of owning it. like all the morons who buy every movie they wanna watch, and now have hundreds of DVD movied stacked on their shelves ... pathetic wastefulness.
i cant control the fact that cities and municipalities are too stupid to realise the pollution and waste and keep lights on all night long. but this year the planet had a 1 hour lights out test a couple months ago as a token gesture to rraise awaeness of our collective stupidity about having the planet lit up at night, when we are faced with the ramifications of what our wasteful lives have done to our environment and caused global warming.
what do you guys do?

It's a cool pic, one Ive had as a wallpaper on my computer every once in a while. Get over yourself with this cancer of the earth crap. The only sadness I get from the picture is how absolutely depressing it must be to be a slave to the sun setting. How fatalistic that life must be.
