You are confusing "apologist" (one who apologizes as in they are sorry) and an "apologist" (one who defends something or someone.)

say for instance a guy from an impoverished neighborhood kills someone. someone then justifies the killing by pointing to his upbringing and blaming the murder upon that...that to me is an apologist. you're just a pussy. big difference.

But wouldn't that be a...justificator or something? So an apologist doesn't actually apologize for anything?

nah...his defender is making an attempt to apologize for his actions by justifying them on some antecedent cause, hence the term apologist. and your not a pussy. your a well mannered young man. did you get the idea for this thread from the saudi rape case thread?

Back to your example...what if the poor conditions really are the cause. Like, let's say the apologist is right. Would they still be labeled an apologist? Or does the term "apologist" always imply the person being wrong?

apologist applies to whoever is justifying the actions committed by someone else. right or wrong, they're still apologizing for that person. like your friend for example. after bashing american media for reporting on a story for what was in his opinion, trying to cover up the collective moral decline of the us, he then said it was saudi culture that was to blame. which is true. me personally, i can't understand the mental douchebaggery it takes to find a way to blame your own country for every misdeed committed by another. it's fucking sick. hence, my calling him an apologist. he couldn't just say it was wrong, he had to launch into a diatribe involving the u.s., western media, etc. to me it's the one of the most perverse forms of bullshit you can engage in. but that's just me.
