Alcohol and pornography banned in Australia

link1

link2

If you are part of the Aboriginal (Native Australian) community that is

excerpts from the second link:

"As reported in The Weekend Australian, a review of Northern Territory communities has proved beyond doubt that a crisis of sexual and physical violence, fuelled by substance abuse, exists and is beyond the scope of existing resources to combat. Children are being traded by their parents for alcohol, and girls as young as 12 are trading sex for drugs with intinerant mine workers. Pornography is rampant and being openly displayed to children. The extent of the crisis is being kept hidden from the public by a permit system that restricts access to community land."

"Too much time and compassion have been wasted debating the underlying causes of substance abuse in a vain attempt to justify it."

You could start a full scale revolution if you did that in the US.

Are you kidding? Prohibition created the richest and most powerful group of organized criminals seen until the prohibition of drugs created an even richer and more powerful group of criminals.

Prohibition is HUGELY successful at raising prices and enriching powerful criminal organizations. Before prohibition, criminals were really just thieves but once alcohol and later drugs were outlawed these criminals became incredibly wealthy.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if drug cartels the world over lobbied the US government through front groups to keep drug penalties severe. Why else would we incarcerate so many drug offenders? Follow the money, who benefits and who loses?

I think certain health related problems to alcohol consumption actually went down, while undesirable social elements benefited from the prohibition period. I think it is fair to assume that just because a social policy does not work in one particular setting does not mean a more astute model and method of application will fail as well. The Aus situation is fairly desperate, everyone has looked the otherway because of the Aus native dimension to the issue/s.

Ive seen these communities first hand, and being white that puts me in a distinct minority.

Aboriginals face a huge self perpetuating ghetto trap. This is not a long term solution but may be a needed jump start. The ideas about introducing private ownership to improve the utilization of community land are logical. I have mired feelings on this whole thing but respect the bold move of cutting through the crap and getting it done.

The article doesnt contradict him, Australia is making paternalistic decision... Instead of prosecuting criminals they are trying to parent the bad behaviour out of people.
