Middle School in Maine to hand out birth control pills to students

Middle School in Maine to hand out birth control pills to students as young as 11 without parents' consent. I just picked this up in CNN right now. How do you feel about this? They've already been handing out condoms, but now moving up to birth control pills.

Is this a good idea? Isn't this sending the wrong message to pre-teen girls to engage in sexual activity at such a young age? Do you consider this morally "wrong?"

I'd just post pictures of Rosie O'Donnell in all the hallways. That should do the trick and for far less money.

ya know..it's not like handing out tylenol. There are soooo many different doses of BCP and there is no way to know what to give someone without a proper blood workup and physical. At least at that young an age. An adult, can at least monitor symptoms and see if her cycle changes or anything...so you can afford to guess a bit more, but to just hand out a pill that changes hormones in your body....na...not a good idea.

I guess I just don't get the allure of sex at age 11. I'm quite sure I was riding a skateboard or playing house or something....I'm sure I wasn't thinking about sex...

Wrong in about 750 senses of the word.

If your kid is having sex at that age, you, as a parent, should be beaten. Then your child should be dipped in boiling semen.

When did drugs/pills become the answer to everything regardless of the side-effects and moral implications?

Well, it's not the girl that's thinking about sex. I'm sure it's the boy that will pressure the girl into doing it. And with the school actually "promoting" this behavior by funding the means for these kids. 11 year old girls will probably have around 14 year old boyfriends..but I'm pretty much just guessing here. When I was 14, I was pretty much ALWAYS thinking about sex...

The host on TV said that they're starting this young in Sweden and other parts of Europe and so far, there hasn't been any negative effects on the children. He said they're starting to teach "sexual exploration" in Kindergarten in those countries.

Kids having sex at 11 is way too young.

And to think there is no negative implications of this is absurd.

i dont really belive this. do you have a source? something has to be wrong about this. you have to be tested first to see what birth control works best with your body. even with a source, there has to be something else to this story.

where would they get mass quantities of BC w/o a prescription?
