The sad thing is these guys don't hurt McCain, because in the red states hatred of gays and jews and admiration for hitler doesn't make you unpopular. They also aren't replayed over and over again in the mainstream media because a loud charismatic black man like wright is just more entertaining the these old farts.

I don't believe Fallwell was "McCain's religious inspiration" at anytime. I'm pretty sure McCain did not attend Fallwell's church for XXX odd years as well while he badmouthed America.

The GOP wouldn't be a viable political party without nutty Christian conservatives. He can't afford to refuse their support.

A few years ago he referred to people like Falwell and Robertson as "agents of intolerance". Obviously he's flip-flopped on that big time so it's difficult to guess what he actually believes. His true feelings on the Christian right probably aren't much different than the average Republican politician: they're a huge voting block of gullible rubes who can be suckered into voting Republican by namedropping Jesus once in a while and pandering to stupid wedge issues like gay marriage and abortion.
