In 2002 if we went to war on energy conservation and advance technologies such as hydrogen, solar and plug-in hybrids we could have improved the national energy efficiency index by about 15 to 20 percent and helped greatly getting ourself on the way off of oil. When I hear that the Saudi leadership talks about increasing production because they do not want us to go away from oil makes me more pissed off. The slow steady climb in the cost for oil is directly related to OPEC's plan.
Unfortunately OPEC did not factor the great growth of China and Russia at the rate they are growing. Saudi Arabia is more worried about the rapid increase in price then other oil producers because of their status with the US. It is funny to this day everyone talks about getting away from oil yet no one does it here in this Country. Honda already ships a hydrogen car of course people say that does not work because there are only a few hydrogen stations out there as a part of a plan that should have started in 02 there could have been thousands of these stations all over the Country.
But even better Honda developed a home hydrogen box that takes natural gas and produces hydrogen the excess heat can be used to heat the house. They said by next year they will have versions that use bio diesel and other eco friendly and more cost effective technologies.
US again drops the ball while all these companies rush to bring plug-in cars out Honda and soon Toyota would have moved on to Hydrogen cars.

You seem to think that vast amounts of gov. money goes in to alternative energy research. In fact the government only devoted about 4 billion towards to alternative energy research last year. Wait till the Olympics and what China is getting ready to announce a multi-year plan to devote some have heard 200 to 300 billion dollars to alternative energy research. Much of these dollars will go to Chinese companies but tons will go to American companies as incentive to bring their talent and technical expertise to China. China wants to lead the world with Hydrogen powered cars and other advance energy producing technologies. American will miss the boat on the most important job creating enterprise as we watch Countries like China take the lead.

I actually agree with much of your post. Unfortunately, we live in a reactive society. That’s the root cause of the issue you addressed in your post. Now, I appreciate the fact McCain wants to do something that will take time (nuke power, drilling etc.) but will ultimately create a more proactive approach to energy consumption. Obama opposes that, which ultimately leaves us in the same vicious cycle we’re currently engaged in. In the end, it won’t be Rev. Wright, or race, or his refusing to wear a flag pin that does him in. It will be his approach to the energy crisis.
Lastly, the Honda car is great but way, way, way too expensive. Even beyond the lack of filling stations, the primary issue with that car is the price. That will keep demand low. That in turn, will keep the need for hydro stations low. Basic economics.
Address the price, fix the problem.

I don't really know that it even matters if China leads the way. So what if they do. How do you think the American people will react to that, knowing the Chinese have made such strides? Again, we are a REACTIVE society. The people will go ape shit paying outrages prices will other countries reduce oil dependency. Only candidates that absolutely address that issue will be elected. So, in the end, it won’t matter much. Worst case scenario, it takes a bit longer. I genuinely hope other countries like China make major leaps on this front. It’ll only motivate our people to call for action.

I love idea #1 & #3. He beats the fuck out of Obama on this. I've been waiting for a politician to say #1 for a decade.
Every year ESPN broadcasts the College Solar Car race accross the desert and I've always drooled at the possibility of public support for this type of inovation. Cheers to the warmonger.
Also, yesterday Obama gave his support for a bill that still allows GW Bush to tap phones without a FISA warrant AND gives immunity to Big Telecom.
Based on this weeks proposals, In my book the score is:
Mccain: 1
Obama: -1

Three excellent ideas in my opinion and it seems that McCain is starting to take a more pragmatic approach to his policies (as opposed to his ideologue-inspired rhetoric.) Whoever become President, I hope Obama/McCain will work together to try to implement some of these policies. I didn't think I'd see the day when McCain is bringing fresher ideas to the table than Obama but the closer it comes to the election, the more it seems McCain is winning the policy battle.

I agree. I like these ideas.
But I take issue with McCain's proposed funding method. He just waved his hand and said, "Oh that's easy, we'll cut pork barrel spending." Nobody likes pork barrel spending, it's a win-win. It's one of those 'too good to be true' solutions that politicians never seem to follow.
