I agree in part. I knew a lot of people who were lazy and dumb in the military. Many failed because they couldn't cut it. Some made it through and barely kept their heads above water, and I question what they'd be doing in the civilian world. I think one of the problems is that the military has an immense support structure. People tell you where to go, what to do, etc. If you lack that ability to take care of youself, and have PTSD to top it off, you could be in a really rough spot once you get out.

I'm an Iraq vet and I have people very close to me that have severe PTSD.

They have it so bad that they are now disabled.

The military takes great care of them too.

Money, benefits, treatment, help finding jobs, help securing spots in schools, etc.

There is no shortage of help out there.

How in God's name is McCain at fault for not fixing the emotional shortcomings of these people?


Most homeless people are mentally handicapped and/or drug/alcohol abusers.

The military is not to blame, the politicians are not to blame, and the inherent role of a standing military is not to blame either.

The only people to blame are the homeless who turn down all of the available help that is offered to them.

You should know that if you join the military, go into the infantry, and progress through the ranks...There is a possibility that you will see combat at one point or another.

I know guys that did 25 years that never saw combat, and I also know guys that saw heavy combat in no time at all.

If you want to nit pick the institution you might want to start by recommending a more thorough psych eval before allowing people into the service.

One of my best friends is fully disabled, and the military pays him Sergeant pay for the rest of his life, as well as medical benefits, job assistance (they put him through EMT school FOR FREE, and he's about to get a job at a fire station that was hooked up by the VA).

Whatever...I could go on and on but I won't...
