Israel hits Palestinian prime minister's office

This could get real ugly real quick....

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/...ier/index.html

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- An Israeli helicopter-fired missile hit the offices of Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya early Sunday, setting the building ablaze, Palestinian sources said.

A bystander suffered minor injuries, hospital officials said. No other casualties were reported.

The missile strike in Gaza City was confirmed by Israel, which launched expansive assaults on Gaza after Palestinians kidnapped Israeli army Cpl. Gilad Shalit, 19, on June 25. (Watch as John Vause reports during the airstrikes from Gaza -- 3:10)

Israeli sources said Haniya's office was being used by terrorists to plan attacks.

In a sermon Friday at a Gaza mosque, Haniya accused Israel of a "premeditated plan" to destroy the Hamas-led Palestinian government and the Palestinian people. (Watch as Palestinians struggle without basic necessities -- 2:45)

"We read what is happening in terms of aggression on our people, and that it is going beyond the abducted soldier," Haniya said.

He also said during the sermon that his government does not have the power to free Shalit as long as Israel continues to threaten military action.

"We demand the end of the aggression on the Palestinian people so matters won't worsen, and they should stop attacking the Palestinian political system and democracy," Haniya said.

Israel launched two more airstrikes within an hour of the attack on Haniya's office, both in or near the Jabaliya refugee camp in Gaza, Palestinian sources said.

The attacks were on an open field used as a Hamas training ground and on a house that the Hamas militia uses as its headquarters, according to Israeli sources.

At least one person was killed in those attacks, Palestinian sources said.

The strikes followed reports by the Israel Defense Forces of clashes with Palestinian gunmen east of Khan Yunis, where Israeli intelligence officials say they suspect Shalit is being held.

The gunmen fired small arms at Israeli soldiers and an anti-tank missile at an engineering vehicle, the IDF said. The gunmen also planted explosive devices in the area.

The Israelis returned fire, but no casualties were reported, according to Palestinian security sources.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continued in an effort to secure the release of Shalit.

The U.N. envoy to the Middle East, Alvero de Soto, was expected to meet Sunday with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Gaza.

The Israeli military operations in southern Gaza and the West Bank include the arrests of several members of the Palestinian government. In a statement faxed to the media early Saturday, an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman repeated that Shalit must be freed without conditions.

"Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has reiterated that there will be no deals, that either Shalit will be released or we will act to bring about his release," Mark Regev said.

Egypt and Qatar have been working to broker a settlement, and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak told the government newspaper al-Ahram late Thursday that the Palestinian ruling faction Hamas had approved a conditional plan for returning Shalit.

However, Mubarak said Israel rejected the terms. Israel contends that doing so would encourage more abductions.

On Saturday an official spokesman for Abbas said the president still hopes a negotiated solution can be reached. He denied that there were deadlocks in negotiations as reported by some media.

Three Palestinian militant groups -- the militant wing of Hamas, the Palestinian ruling faction; the Popular Resistance Committees; and a previously unknown group, the Army of Islam -- have claimed responsibility for Shalit's abduction.

The groups faxed a statement to media outlets Saturday demanding the release of 1,000 Arab prisoners, including women and children, from Israeli jails.

The message did not specify if the new demand was in exchange for Shalit's freedom. (Full story)

On Saturday a White House spokesperson said U.S. President George W. Bush called Shalit's release key to ending the crisis between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza.

On Friday the state-run Israel Broadcasting Authority reported that Shalit was alive and had been treated for injuries. No further information was available, the station said.

Agreed,

An organised democratic Palestinian government has got to be a serious concern for Israel.

I bet the Israeli's wipe most of them out over the next few days or weeks.

I disagree with that... I think the Hamas government is the entity in trouble.

The political wing knows where the Isreali solider is (It's not a whacky conspiracy. Most Hamas members admit he is around but say they have no idea where he is.) and better release him.

If the kid turns up in a video having his head sawed off by Hamas militants then the Isreali army will go in and blast all instiutions in Gaza, terroists homes and their families homes, and various other things causing Gaza to descend into total chaos which means the militant groups will start fighting each other again. Right now they have a controlled corrutpion and they did have some cover from having their leaders assissinated, until of course recent days... really, Hamas has everything to lose right now.

I think there may have been a miscomunication. I agree that Hamas is facing possible extinction and soon.

Israel

My concern is that what will the price be if everything falls apart. They got to realise that taking out a government is a big step in probably the wrong direction. If this happens it will prove that they're not really all that interested in peace with their neighbour.

Palestine

If they do have control of whoever has the soldier then they better dump him in the closest local 7/11 parking lot with some quarters to call home base and quick. If this escalate the Israeli's will be all over the Palestinians civilians. The Palestinians are still pretty much civilians facing a advanced army and if that army goes in there full tilt boogie then lots of holes will need digging.

I still wouldn't be surprised if there is no missing soldier. It sure as hell wouldn't be the first time a government has invented a crisis to escalate their plans. The history books a full of such events.
