Israel declines security help for visiting Carter

http://www.reuters.com/article/world...rpc=22&sp=true
Quote:
American sources close to the matter said the Shin Bet security service, which helps protect visiting dignitaries and is overseen by Olmert's office, declined to meet the head of Carter's Secret Service security detail or provide his team with assistance as is customary during such visits.

"They're not getting support from local security," an American source said.

"UNPRECEDENTED" BREACH

Another source described the snub as an "unprecedented" breach between the Israeli Shin Bet and the U.S. Secret Service, which protects all current and former U.S. presidents, as well as Israeli leaders when they visit the United States.
This is an amazing act of contempt directed at the US. Carter is a liberal fool, but that's beside the point. He is a former President of the US, a country to which Israel owes its existence. Israel has the elementary obligation to offer him protection.

Maybe it's because of that book he wrote.

"Jimmy Carter has been snubbed by Israeli leaders and criticised by the US State Department after it was announced that he would meet with Hamas President Khalid Mashaal in Syria during a visit to the Middle East this week."
If this is still on [There has been a lot of press about it] I could see why. Let Carter get his security from Hamas.

I bet it has something to do with Jimmy wanting to negotiate with Hamas as well.

You beat me to it by 5 seconds!

That's definately what I'm thinking. My opinion is that Israel should give him protection while he's there, if they wanted to make a statement they shouldn't let him come in the first place.

I think its just a "disapprove" disconnect, something that will be cleared up with a few phone calls. Israel is not going to risk the safety of a former U.S President being attacked on their soil, no matter if they like his views or not. There is too many "sources close to the matter" and "American source" in the story to be official policy at this time.

Yes, because if Olmert was going to meet with Bin Laden you'd be OK with that, right?
